Yankees Pick Up 29th Win of the 2026 Season After a Disastrous Road Trip

MLB

At Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees welcomed the Toronto Blue Jays in the first game of a four-game series. Before this series, New York struggled, going 2-7 in their most recent road trip and losing two out of three games in their Subway Series matchup against the New York Mets. During this Monday night matchup with Toronto, the Yankees had to fight to pick up this win as the Blue Jays were not letting up. Toronto led 5-3 after six innings; however, a four-run seventh inning for the Bronx Bombers gave them a two-run lead, and even though David Bednar gave up a run during the top of the ninth, the two-time all-star was able to put down big-time hitters in George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to give New York a 7-6 win. Tuesday, Will Warren will take the mound for the Yankees against Toronto’s Dylan Cease.

The Struggles from the Road Trip Are Still Showing

Even though the Yankees went 2-7 during their most recent road trip, they showed they aren’t afraid to get back in the swing of things after a tough series against the Mets. Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer in the first at-bat of the game, which definitely sparked this team’s momentum during Monday’s win. Yet, once the Blue Jays tied the game and eventually took the lead, there was certainly something in the air that could show the Bronx Bombers losing patience and hope. Both Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit two home runs, which lit up the fans at Yankee Stadium. Even with a two-run lead, New York still could not feel safe, as the Blue Jays were ready to strike back and did during the top of the ninth. With a win under their belt, the Bronx Bombers need to start building the confidence they had during the first month of the 2026 regular season.

Bednar’s Off-Speed Pitches Saved the Day

The two-time all-star Bednar gave up a run to Jesús Sánchez to make it a 7-6 ball game. Bednar would eventually have to face the top of Toronto’s lineup with one out and runners on first and second. On a 3-0 count against Springer, the two-time all-star would use three splitters to strike out the 2017 World Series Champion outfielder. He then would get Guerrero Jr. to a full count, where the five-time all-star first baseman grounded out to second base to give the Yankees the win. While the two-time all-star struggled at first, he was able to get the Yankees out of a jam and a much-needed win. That must be a confidence builder moving deeper into the 2026 season. Hopefully, in his next appearance, Bednar can continue to bring the heat and effectively use his splitter and curveball as he did in this matchup.
