Yankees Suffer 60th Loss of the 2026 Season to the Angels
After scoring 16 runs during a 16-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon, the New York Yankees traveled to Los Angeles to take on the Angels. During the first game of a three-game series, New York struggled severely. The offense couldn’t pull it together, the pitching was disappointing, and their fielding was even worse, costing three errors in a displeasing 10-1 loss. With the final month of the season upon us, Gerrit Cole needs to help the Bronx Bombers get on the right track during the second matchup of the series.
No Lombard Jr., Yet the Errors Still Came
The Yankees August 31st matchup against the Angels was the second consecutive game that the team didn’t have George Lombard Jr. in the lineup. This came after the rookie shortstop committed six errors in six straight games after being touted as one of the best defensive young shortstops to be called up to the Majors. However, even with the 21-year-old not in the lineup, New York found themselves committing three errors in their brutal loss. Two errors in the bottom of the fifth by Spencer Jones and reliever Michael Fulmer, then a throwing error by José Caballero during the bottom of the sixth, did not help the Yankees’ struggles in this matchup. New York needs the best version of themselves in September as they hold the lead for the top AL Wild Card spot.
Elmer Rodriguez & the Bullpen Fumbled This Start
Starting pitcher Elmer Rodriguez is still looking for his first Major League win. Against an Angels team that lost seven straight and has the worst record in the American League, this seemed like a great spot for Rodriguez to get a win in the column. Yet, fumbled this start completely, throwing three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. The bullpen did not look great as well. Fulmer & Luis Gil gave up a run each, while David Bednar allowed three runs. Angels first baseman Vaughn Grissom finished with four RBIs, and Los Angeles scored 10 runs without hitting a single home run.
