17-Year WWE Veteran Set to Depart the Company in 2026

WWE

After spending nearly 17 years with WWE, it has been confirmed that Irish-born superstar Sheamus is set to depart from the company. The company attempted to restructure a new deal with ‘The Celtic Warrior’, as TKO has attempted to do with multiple superstars under the new ownership, but Sheamus decided not to renew his contract, opting to let his contract run out and walk away from the company as a free agent. From winning the WWE Championship just months after his debut to chasing down the only title that eluded him his entire WWE career, Sheamus has done it all in WWE, and there is no doubt that he will certainly create more history wherever he decides to go.

Sheamus made his WWE debut on a 2009 episode of ECW. He was quickly well received by those within the company, being pushed as a heel. Just a few months later, in December 2009, Sheamus would defeat John Cena in a Tables Match to win his first WWE Championship, holding the distinction of recording the third shortest time since debuting to capture a world title. After losing the WWE Championship, ‘The Celtic Warrior’ competed in his first WrestleMania match in a losing effort to Triple H at WrestleMania 26. He captured the WWE Championship a second time in 2010 before dropping the title to Randy Orton in a Six-Pack Challenge at Night of Champions 2010.

The next few years would see Sheamus go through a character change. Before becoming a face, he won the 2010 King of the Ring Tournament and captured the United States Championship in 2011. A program with Mark Henry saw ‘The Celtic Warrior’ become a face, and before ending the year, he went on a winning streak. Sheamus would then go on to win the 2012 Royal Rumble match and challenge Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 28. Sheamus would make history by capturing the world title in 18 seconds.

Sheamus would continue on in his career through multiple character changes, from aligning with The Authority to winning Money in the Bank and taking the WWE Championship off of Roman Reigns to teaming with the League of Nations. One of the biggest highlights in Sheamus’ career came when he began a rivalry with Cesaro that turned into one of the most popular tag teams of the decade. Both men clashed in a best-of-seven series that led to them teaming up and capturing the tag team titles on multiple occasions. Their biggest win as a team came when they dethroned The New Day and ended their record-setting 483-day reign as Tag Champions. Known as The Bar, Sheamus and Cesaro succeeded on both Raw and SmackDown before they eventually split up.

In the past few years, Sheamus has dealt with multiple injuries, but that hasn’t stopped him from producing some amazing matches. His barn burners with Drew McIntyre and ‘The Ring General’ Gunther received high praise from many fans. One of the biggest stories WWE was able to tell with Sheamus was his search for capturing the only title that prevented him from becoming a Grand Slam Champion: the Intercontinental Championship. Although he competed multiple times for the title, he was unable to win it. His last match in front of the WWE Universe came in a six-man tag team match alongside Cena and Rey Mysterio against Judgment Day on an episode of Raw in November 2025. Sheamus has since been out with an injury, but now that he has rejected WWE’s new contract offer, he will no longer be on WWE television and will have to find a new company to work for.

At 48 years old, Sheamus doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Any company that wishes to offer a contract to ‘The Celtic Warrior’ understands that they will be contracting a hard-hitting wrestler who isn’t one to shy away from getting physical. Sheamus can go anywhere, from competing in the G1 Climax in New Japan Pro Wrestling to throwing it down with The Death Riders in All Elite Wrestling. Wherever he decides to go, the fans will fully be behind Sheamus and wish him the very best in his future decisions.
