1999 or 2026? Knicks and Spurs Gear Up for Long-Awaited Finals Rematch
27 years ago, the San Antonio Spurs won the 1999 NBA Finals in five games against the New York Knicks. Tim Duncan won Finals MVP, and it would be the first of five championships in San Antonio’s dynasty that spanned three across three different decades: the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. Now, 27 years later, the Knicks will look to win their first NBA Championship in 53 years while the Spurs look to start a new dynasty behind the 2026 Defensive Player of the Year, Victor Wembanyama. Who will fight through all the odds to capture an NBA title?
Jalen Brunson and the rest of the Knicks are ready to play on the biggest stage in the NBA after defeating the Atlanta Hawks in six games, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Cleveland Cavaliers in a four-game sweep. At times, OG Anunoby has looked like New York’s best player, while Karl-Anthony Towns, Mitchell Robinson, and Landry Shamet have all stepped up in big moments. Brunson is averaging 27 points and seven assists throughout the 2026 NBA Playoffs and will continue to lead the team to success through these Finals. While Mikal Bridges struggled in the series against Atlanta, his offense has really picked up since then, and he’ll look to be a big factor against San Antonio. New York fans are anticipating the team’s chemistry to be the highest it’s ever been as they seek to be at the top of the NBA mountain for the first time in over half a century.
For Wembanyama and the Spurs, they swept the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round, defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games in the Western Semifinals, and then conquered the defending NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games during the Western Conference Finals. Now, ‘Wemby’ is ready to shake up the NBA and show he’s ready to take the league by storm at just 22 years old. Stephon Castle’s turnover problems may cause issues during these NBA Finals; however, he should be the second leading scorer behind the 2026 Defensive Player of the Year. Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, and Julian Champagnie have all been key pieces throughout the series against OKC to help lead them to their first NBA Finals appearance in 12 years.
Some of the biggest x-factors in this series for the Knicks will be the offensive consistency of Bridges and whether Towns, Mitchell, and even Ariel Hukporti can defend ‘Wemby’ successfully in four games through this seven-game series. For San Antonio, Castle’s turnover problem throughout these playoffs has been the Spurs’ biggest concern. Between Vassell, Harper, Champagnie, Keldon Johnson, and De’Aaron Fox, one of them must be a key piece behind Wembanyama and Castle. Miles McBride and Josh Hart will play an intricate part in New York’s success. Both teams will certainly be looking to get the opponent’s key players in foul trouble in order to get more chances for free points at the free-throw line.
Both teams should be evenly matched throughout these NBA Finals as they were throughout the regular season. These two teams won one game against one another in the regular season, but the Knicks got the upper hand as they defeated the Spurs to win the 2025 NBA Cup back in December. If New York wins, I think the series goes to six games, while if San Antonio wins, I think the series goes the full seven games. This could be one of the most balanced matchups in the NBA Finals we’ve seen for a while, as both teams were expected to be Finals contenders, but no one actual though these two teams would go the distance.
