Predicting the Winners of Groups A-F at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is all set and quickly approaching, and with the tournament expanding to 48 teams, the group stage will be more competitive than ever. Every nation enters with hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds, but only one team can finish at the top of each group. While surprises always happen at the World Cup and second-place teams can advance, several nations appear to have the talent, depth, and experience needed to win their respective groups. Here are my predictions for the winners of Groups A through F and why I believe they will finish at the top of the standings.

Group A Winner: Mexico

Group A is one of the more balanced groups in the tournament, featuring Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia. While Mexico may not be considered one of the strongest teams in the competition overall, they enter the World Cup with a major advantage as one of the host nations. Playing all three group-stage matches on home soil should provide a significant boost, as passionate Mexican supporters are expected to create a tremendous atmosphere and help push the team forward. The crowd's energy could make a major difference in several closely contested matches. Mexico also possesses a talented and experienced squad capable of competing with any team in the group. Combined with the motivation of performing in front of their home fans, I expect Mexico to do enough to finish atop Group A and advance to the Round of 32 as group winners.

Group B Winner: Canada

I predict Canada will finish at the top of Group B, which features Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Qatar. Similar to Mexico in Group A, Canada benefits from being one of the host nations and will have the advantage of playing all three group-stage matches on home soil. Soccer continues to grow rapidly across the country, and the support from Canadian fans could provide a major boost in what should be a competitive group. Canada also possesses a talented core of players capable of making an impact on the biggest stage. Forward Jonathan David will be expected to lead the attack and provide the goal-scoring threat needed to secure important results, while captain Alphonso Davies brings world-class talent, leadership, and versatility from the defensive side, while also being a threat when attacking. With home-field advantage and a strong group of key players, I expect Canada to finish first in Group B and advance to the knockout stage as group winners.

Group C Winner: Brazil

Group C could quietly become one of the most competitive groups in the tournament, featuring Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, and Haiti. Both Morocco and Scotland possess talented squads capable of making matches difficult for any opponent, while Haiti will be eager to prove itself on the biggest stage. However, when looking at the overall quality, depth, and experience within the group, Brazil stands above the rest. The five-time World Cup champions consistently enter major tournaments as contenders and possess elite talent across every position on the field. With a roster filled with experienced players who play in Europe's top leagues and world-class attacking ability, Brazil should have enough firepower to control matches and earn the results necessary to top the group. While the competition may be tougher than some expect, I believe Brazil's talent and experience will ultimately be too much for the other teams to handle, allowing them to advance to the knockout stage as Group C winners.

Group D Winner: United States

Group D features the United States, Türkiye, Paraguay, and Australia in what should be a competitive battle for the top spot. As one of the host nations, the United States will have the opportunity to showcase the growth of American soccer on the biggest stage in the sport. Playing in front of home crowds throughout the group stage should provide a significant advantage, with supporters across the country expected to create a strong atmosphere and rally behind the team. The United States possesses a talented roster capable of competing with quality opponents and will enter the tournament with high expectations of making a deep run. While Türkiye has enough talent and experience to create problems and challenge for first place, I believe the combination of home-field advantage, squad quality, and fan support will help the United States finish atop Group D and advance to the knockout stage as group winners.

Group E Winner: Germany

Group E features Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador. While Ecuador and the Ivory Coast are capable of making matches competitive, this group appears to set up well for Germany to advance in first place. Although Germany has not enjoyed the same level of World Cup success since winning the tournament in 2014, the nation continues to produce talented players and enter major competitions with high expectations. The squad is filled with experienced players, quality depth, and strong coaching that should help them navigate the group stage successfully. Germany also possesses the tactical discipline and tournament experience that often separate top national teams from the rest of the field. While there could be a few challenging moments along the way, I expect Germany's overall talent and experience to be too much for the other teams in the group, allowing them to finish atop Group E and comfortably advance to the knockout stage.

Group F Winner: Netherlands

Group F may be one of the most competitive groups in the tournament, featuring Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Tunisia. Unlike some of the other groups, there are multiple teams that have a realistic chance of finishing in first place. Japan has proven in recent World Cups that it can compete with top nations, including a first-place finish in its group at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while Sweden enters the tournament with a talented and experienced squad capable of causing problems for any opponent. Despite the strength of the competition, I predict the Netherlands to finish atop the group. Led by captain Virgil van Dijk, the Dutch possess a strong blend of experience, leadership, and depth throughout the roster. The Netherlands also benefits from players and coaches who have competed on the biggest international stages and understand what it takes to navigate a difficult group. In a group where any of the top three teams could potentially finish first, I believe the Dutch quality, experience, and defensive stability will ultimately help them edge out the competition and advance as Group F winners.

The World Cup always delivers surprises, and predicting group winners is never easy. However, based on current form, squad talent, and experience, these teams appear to be the strongest candidates to finish first in their groups. With the tournament being hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, every nation will be looking to impress on the biggest stage in sports when the World Cup begins on June 11th. If these predictions come true, the knockout stage would feature several exciting matchups and set the stage for another memorable World Cup.
