2026 Blue Jays Break Three-Game Losing Streak with 1-0 Win Against the White Sox
The much-needed all-star break hasn’t helped the Blue Jays yet, after losing 12-4 to the White Sox in their first game back, but hopefully they’re more put together for the second game of the series. With Chicago now on a four-game win streak that’s helped them get to 51-45, Toronto has some catching up to do. The 2025 ALCS Champions are 45-52, but hopefully the pregame ceremony to celebrate their back-to-back World Series wins in 1992 and 1993 will give them some motivation. The starting pitchers today are Davis Martin and Shane Bieber. Martin has a 3.41 ERA, while Bieber, unfortunately, has a 7.64 ERA after struggling since returning from his injury five starts ago. Another exciting matchup will be Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto, two of the most promising free-agent signings from Japan this past offseason. Murakami currently has a .233 AVG, a .906 OPS, and 20 home runs, while Okamoto has a .237 AVG, a .785 OPS, and 22 home runs. Whichever team comes out on top of this series, one of these guys will likely have something to do with it. To start the first, the Sox got some base runners, but Bieber was able to keep it scoreless. The game remained 0-0 until a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. double and a George Springer single combined for the first run of the game. Somehow, that was the only scoring play in this game. The Blue Jays won 1-0.
Is Bieber Finally Warming Up?
With a 7.64 ERA through his first four starts post-injury, it’s clear Bieber has been a little rusty to start his season. One of the many pitching injuries of 2026, the Jays have missed their two-time all-star. His other accolades include a Cy Young Award, a rare Triple Crown, a Gold Glove, an ERA title, and an AS MVP. The 31-year-old has had multiple injuries during his career, which is why he’s only played eight total games the past two seasons. However, when at his best, he can get an ERA as low as 1.63, as he did in 2020. Today, we finally got a glimpse of that pitcher as he recorded six strikeouts over six scoreless innings. He also gave up only three hits and two walks to get the win. This is exactly what the Jays have been missing. With Max Scherzer still hurt, the starting rotation currently includes Spencer Miles, Bieber, Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, and Dylan Cease. Each of those starters has had their own unique struggles this year, but if Toronto can have one more consistent pitcher like their 2026 all-star Cease, they might stand a chance. If Bieber can keep his command as consistent as he did today, this team might be one step closer to returning to the World Series.
Stranding Base Runners
The 2026 Blue Jays have a bad habit of leaving base runners stranded in crucial situations and getting their extra-base hits when the bases are empty. For example, despite their embarrassing loss on Friday, Toronto had three home runs. Unfortunately, Springer, Brandon Valenzuela, and Luis Urías only had solo homers. Between hits and walks, the Jays had 11 opportunities to score yesterday, while the Sox had 15. Yet, the score ended at a devastating 12-4. Those stats show that this team doesn't have a problem getting on base, only with moving their base runners. Today, the Blue Jays had eight chances to score and got lucky by only pulling through once. So far in 2026, the team has combined for 794 hits and 269 walks, but only scored 396 times. If they want to improve their 46-53 record and have a chance at the playoffs, a good place to start is scoring more runs.
