Is the Chicago Bears 27-Year-Old Corner Being Underestimated in 2026?
The Chicago Bears struggled defensively in 2025, despite a successful year that culminated in their first playoff win since 2011. The defense ranked 29th in total yards allowed per game and 23rd in points allowed per game. Despite the low rankings, the one positive the unit was able to have was ranking first in takeaways, with 33 total on the year. Chicago made multiple changes this offseason, clearing out nearly the entire defensive back room after the disappointing performances that would have nearly cost them close games. The Bears hit reset, but one player who has remained this season is veteran cornerback Jaylon Johnson.
The two-time Pro Bowler was drafted by the Bears in the 2020 NFL Draft, with the 50th overall pick. Johnson has remained with the team in all five seasons of his NFL career, becoming a staple for the defense and one of the best at his position. The star corner’s best years came in 2023 and 2024, where he combined for a total of six interceptions, 89 tackles, and two forced fumbles. He would sign an extension following the 2024 season, a four-year, $76 million contract that locked him in Chicago until 2027. Johnson was able to earn the huge payday with the help of restless Bears fans, who made it known to the front office they wanted more years of high-caliber play at the position. Unfortunately, last season was Johnson’s most disappointing in the league yet, as injuries plagued his year.
Johnson was only able to play in seven games last year, where he was still able to earn an interception. His injury came in Week Two against the Detroit Lions, where he suffered a severe core muscle and abductor tear in his pelvic bone. Most recently, he was ranked outside of the top ten in ESPN’s cornerback ranking, falling off the list just one year later. All eyes have seemed to come off the Bears veteran corner, but fortunately, it provides an opportunity to fly under the radar and return to form in 2026. Johnson will not only be playing to bounce back from his down year, but also, as his contract is coming to an end, he will need to prove himself once again to earn another extension.
