2026 Red Sox Lose to Athletics in Series Finale
It was bound to happen eventually, but it stings a little all the same. With their August 9th loss, a 4-3 fall to the Athletics, the Red Sox dropped their first series since June. Nine in a row is a remarkable streak, and that stretch has turned the season around dramatically. The game against the A’s did show off some weaknesses for the Boston team, as incredible as they’ve been. Perhaps it will serve as a sign to regroup and come back stronger for the upcoming series against the Blue Jays.
Star Relievers Struggle
Even the best arms have their rough outings. Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman, the usually lethal combo for the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, both allowed runs to blow the game. Whitlock was assigned a blown save, and Aroldis the loss. It’s also worth noting that the veteran closer has seemed slightly off lately, at least compared to innings earlier in the year when he was unhittable. His ERA is up over the last seven games. The appearances of the man they call the Cuban Missile are still far from bad, but certainly worth paying attention to.
Unexpected Bench Player Shines
In a performance that won’t make any history books, but is worth celebrating anyway, newcomer Eli White had himself a strong game. The right fielder, taking over as Wilyer Abreu returns to full health, had three hits in four at-bats. His RBI in a low-scoring game was also quite impactful. We are mere days into White’s time in Beantown, and who knows how much playing time he will see, given Roman Anthony’s imminent return. If he has a game like this every so often, though, he is more than welcome at Fenway.
Rutschman Prepares Return
Speaking of injured players on their way back, the nine-time World Series champions were hit with good news postgame. Catcher Adley Rutschman will travel with the team to Canada for the series against Toronto. Rutschman was just acquired from the Orioles, and he has been rehabbing in Triple-A Worcester. Fans eagerly anticipate a debut behind the plate for his new team. After an afternoon that reminded the world the Red Sox are beatable, it’s comforting to know they are still in the process of getting better.
