2026 Yankees Fall to the Tigers, Losing Four of Their Last Five Games
After taking their 45th win of the season against the Chicago White Sox, the New York Yankees have struggled as of late, as they’ve lost two out of three in the following series against the Cincinnati Reds. Entering Monday night, the Bronx Bombers looked to recapture the momentum they had during the better part of June. However, with only five out of nine Yankees recording at least one hit for the night, New York fell 5-3. The Bronx Bombers will have a chance to even the series on Tuesday with Carlos Rodón on the mound.
The Defense Needed to Stand Behind Gerrit Cole
During his last outing, Gerrit Cole went six innings, striking out six batters in a 12-2 win over the White Sox. On Monday night, the six-time all-star pitched four and one-third innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, while allowing a walk and striking out five batters. Against Detroit, the Yankees’ defense did not stand behind Cole, allowing numerous hits in the gap of the outfield after the 2023 AL Cy Young Award looked solid during the first two innings of the game. The six-time all-star’s next possible start could be Saturday or Sunday in the Yankees’ four-game series against the Boston Red Sox, where New York will need to back up one of their ace in order to beat their biggest rivals.
New York’s Bullpen Stayed Stable After Cole Left the Mound
Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough looked phenomenal coming from the bullpen during the first loss of the series. Both men combined for three and two-thirds innings, not allowing a single hit with two walks and two strikeouts. New York needs their bullpen to stay stable throughout the season to pick up timely, close run games. If the Yankees can continue to find consistency from their bullpen, they can expand their lead in the AL East Division, which would be huge heading into the all-star break in a few weeks. Cole needs to dig deep for a great start against Boston and hope the bullpen can continue to find the right balance to keep the team on the right track.
