27-Year-Old Backup Quarterback Re-Signs with the Patriots
Tommy DeVito has made strides in the NFL since starting with the New York Giants. After being a backup quarterback for the New England Patriots and making it to the Super Bowl, he was set to enter free agency. The 27-year-old re-signed with the Patriots, a massive surprise for everyone who thought he would take a starting role on another team. It may not be an easy transition for him, but he is definitely looking forward to becoming more in tune with the New England culture.
DeVito started his career playing for the Giants, where he was a backup turned starter when New York’s quarterbacks went down during the 2023 NFL season. He was the person to put the pieces back together. However, the Giants decided to cut him after signing former quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and drafting rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. Since then, the Patriots managed to sign them to their roster once he was officially let go from the Big Apple.
DeVito's new contract is worth $7.4 million for the next two years. It is well deserved after the career he already has. This backup quarterback has appeared in 12 NFL games, starting in eight of them. He has completed 145 of 222 passes for 1,358 yards, posting a completion rate just over 65 percent. DeVito has thrown eight touchdown passes compared to three interceptions, giving him a solid touchdown-to-turnover ratio. His career passer rating sits around 88, showing efficient play for a young quarterback. In addition to his passing numbers, he has contributed over 200 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown using his mobility.
This past season, DeVito even made it to the Super Bowl as a backup for his former team, the Patriots. He did not get any playing time, but he was still part of the team, supporting and learning from their starting quarterback, Drake Maye. DeVito has always been a successful backup quarterback for anyone that he’s played for. Despite everything, the 27-year-old quarterback is usually left in the dark, and during the Super Bowl, this was also the case.
Now that DeVito is back in New England, he will be able to learn more from the other quarterbacks and stand out more than he has. He will be able to learn from Maye and the Patriots’ coaching staff. He won’t be a starter unless something were to happen to Maye. The 27-year-old quarterback will still be sitting back behind the curtain waiting for his time to shine again.
