A Late Run by the Lakers Surges Them Over the Pelicans

NBA

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 110-101, cementing their dominance over New Orleans and strengthening their bid for a top-six playoff spot in the Western Conference. This win gave the Lakers a clean sweep of the season series, 4-0. A key pattern throughout all four games was the Lakers' ability to get off to strong starts; they consistently outscored the Pelicans in the first quarter, establishing an early physical edge that the Pelicans, who are currently 19-43, struggled to counter. The Lakers came a long way from potentially trading starting center Deandre Ayton to the Pelicans to improve their situation.

The Luka-LeBron Synergy

The Lakers, with Luka Dončić and LeBron James, continue to disprove the skeptics. Luka Dončić led the team with a double-double, hitting crucial step-back threes in the fourth quarter to stop a late Pelicans rally. At age 41, LeBron James remains highly effective, scoring 30 points and serving as a secondary playmaker. Their on-court chemistry has turned the Lakers into one of the league's most clutch teams, with a 14-1 record in close games this season. The addition of Deandre Ayton has brought consistent double-double production in the paint. His skill in finishing alley oops from Luka and LeBron, along with rim protection, disrupted the Pelicans' frontcourt and cut down second-chance scoring opportunities.

Trey Murphy III Is a Lone Bright Spot

Despite the loss, Trey Murphy III kept up his impressive season, often leading the Pelicans' offense alone. After scoring a career-high 42 points in their January game, he again became their main focus, using his length and shooting ability to keep New Orleans competitive until the final moments. This victory places them in sixth position, just ahead of the Phoenix Suns. Avoiding the Play-in tournament is a top priority for JJ Redick’s team as the regular season nears its end. New Orleans remains at the bottom of the West standings. Although injuries to Zion Williamson have affected them, the emphasis is now on developing younger players such as rookie Derik Queen. The race for the fifth and sixth seeds will be exciting. With two upcoming games against the Nuggets in ten days, the Lakers have a chance to surpass Denver and accomplish a better first-round playoff position. Meanwhile, the Pelicans have fallen to 13th place and are likely focused on the draft lottery.
