Action-Packed Third Day Unfolds at Steelers Training Camp as Defense Dominates
Recently sent to Pittsburgh in a blockbuster trade, Jalen Ramsey took advantage of his first impression with the Steelers by hauling in his first interception off of Aaron Rodgers, reading and jumping a corner route. He’s showcasing the incredible talent that many people were questioning was still present. The offense tried to push the pace and find some momentum, but ultimately, Ramsey and the defense were too much to handle for the 41-year-old QB. The interception was a look of things to come in day three of training camp, as the offense couldn’t find its groove.
Ramsey is still proving to be a physical beast as he sits at 31 years old. He was moving a lot pre-snap, which is a nightmare for any offense, especially one with a QB whose legs are on their last run. Ironically, Ramsey’s interception was a pass intended for Jonnu Smith, who was part of the deal that sent Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh. Rodgers tried to lob the ball to the sideline, right to Smith’s hands, but Ramsey sprang in the air and grabbed possession of the ball. “We feel like he can cover anyone, to be quite honest with you. He’s a utility back. And by that I mean he’s versatile. He plays outside, he plays nickel, he plays safety, and that’s just a reflection of it.” Mike Tomlin had this to say when asked about Ramsey’s profound athleticism.
Any fans who visited Saturday’s training camp hoping to see the new-look offense light up were ultimately disappointed. At one point, a rotation of different QBs threw a series of five straight incompletions. Some were due to drops, some to erratic throws by the QB, and some to the defense that didn’t allow anyone to get open. Another reason the defense showed out is that the offense features a lot of new faces, especially at skill positions, which will take time for them to work up chemistry. The featured duo in Pittsburgh, Rodgers and D.K. Metcalf, have yet to find their rhythm, along with Jonnu and the rest of Rodgers’ new teammates. I think it’s safe to say that Pittsburgh’s defense has nothing to worry about, but they’re hoping for the team’s sake that the offense starts flowing.
