Are the Falcons Ready to Move On From Their Former Heisman Finalist in 2026?

NFL

The Atlanta Falcons shocked the NFL world when they selected former Washington superstar quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with their eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft. Having previously signed Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year, $180 million contract, Penix was drafted as a ‘Quarterback of the future’ according to previous general manager Terry Fontenot. Well, the Falcons are now entering year three of the Michael Penix experience, and it seems that the new regime is ready to move on from the former Heisman finalist. Is the writing on the wall for Penix’s time in Atlanta?

Flashes of Brilliance, Buried by Inconsistency

2025 was an up-and-down year for both the high-ceiling passer and the Falcons team. Flashes of brilliance came and went, but inconsistency ultimately defined his season. Penix would at times display the arm strength that made him so sought after, only to follow up with jittery pocket presence and subpar accuracy. For every Week Four game against Washington—where he lit up their defense for 313 passing yards and two touchdowns—there was a disappointing showing the week prior against the Carolina Panthers. The roller-coaster play reached a crucial point in a Week 11 battle with the rival Panthers. The former college star was once again showing flashes as the strong-armed pocket passer the Falcons drafted him to be, on pace for another 300-yard game. But on the first drive of the second half, the timing-dependent quarterback suffered an injury that ended his season.

Injury History Looms Large Once Again

The season took a brutal turn with a torn ACL, deepening a pattern of leg injuries that refuses to let go. Throughout his time in college and the NFL, Penix has suffered five season-ending injuries. Warning signs were there, but Atlanta chose upside over caution with the eighth overall pick. Now, as the left-handed gunslinger enters his third NFL year and has yet to play in a full season as a starting quarterback, the Falcons are considering alternatives. There is a decent chance that it stays the same with the signing of Miami Dolphins cast-off Tua Tagovailoa. Tua, who has had a litany of injuries as well, is going to be battling for the starting job during training camp. Anything short of winning that job might slam the door on his future in Atlanta, as Ian Cunningham has no allegiance to either quarterback.

Quarterback Competition Heats Up in Atlanta

The quarterback situation in Atlanta is still a mess, and the former Washington prospect is one of the main reasons. Cunningham could be looking in a completely different direction at the quarterback position once the 2026 season comes to an end. Just like his teammate Kyle Pitts, there is no guaranteed long-term spot on the roster come the end of the next season for Penix. The new regime has been cutthroat in its approach to roster construction. If you are a weak spot that can be overcome, Cunningham and his staff will do what it takes to improve the team. Penix will soon reach his fourth year, and the signs of getting his fifth-year option picked up are grim to say the least. Will he be able to make it to OTAs healthy? Will Penix win the starting job over Tua? These are the questions Michael Penix will have to answer before the start of the 2026 season. It’s now or never for Penix if he wants the big A to be his long-term home.
