Gamecocks Women’s Basketball Moving Forward After Blowout Championship Loss

Dawn Staley and her team experienced one of the biggest deficit losses in a title game on Sunday, April 5th. The championship game against UCLA ended 79-51, leaving viewers shocked. South Carolina had been a dominant force in the SEC all season, as it has been for the past couple of years. However, things just didn’t click for the Gamecocks when it mattered most. Now, Staley and her team are looking to move on and start working towards next season.

A Surprising Championship Performance from South Carolina

After South Carolina’s loss to UConn the previous year, everybody expected them to come out this year guns ablazing. The Gamecocks, led by senior guard Raven Johnson and sophomore forward Joyce Edwards, were on a 16-1 winning streak coming into the championship game. They had all the confidence after knocking off the number one seed, UConn. However, the game did not go as planned. UCLA had all the offensive power, and even a brick-wall defense like South Carolina’s was not enough to stop the hungry Bruins team. The game ended up as one of the biggest scoring deficits in any NCAA women’s championship game. This was a huge disappointment for the Gamecocks and definitely brought back negative memories of the previous championship when the Huskies won 82-59.

Tensions Between Dawn Staley and Geno Auriemma Following Their Final Four Matchup

At the conclusion of the game between UConn and South Carolina, UConn coach Geno Auriemma seemed to have some words with Dawn Staley. This sparked an outburst between them, resulting in Auriemma leaving the game without shaking hands. The public immediately responded to this, calling out Auriemma for his poor sportsmanship. Staley told a reporter that it had been about a ‘missed handshake’ at the start of the game. The negative finish to such a great game really distracted from South Carolina’s astonishing performance. Later, both Staley and Auriemma issued statements with apologies and requests that everyone move forward.

Looking Ahead to Next Season

The face of a powerhouse program certainly has her work cut out for her, as she is losing four of her starting players. However, since she developed such a prestigious basketball program, high school stars seem to be drawn into the dynasty. So far, Staley has acquired Jerzy Robinson, a guard out of Arizona who is the fifth-ranked recruit. She’s also signed forwards Kelsi Andrews and Kaeli Wynn. Part of the reason the Gamecocks have been so successful is their clever recruitment. Staley also draws players in because of her genuine personality and focused attitude. Any athlete would be lucky to play under such a culture-setter, thanks to the way she moves the program forward, even through adversity.
