Are the New York Giants Prioritizing Nostalgia Over Progress in 2026?

NFL

The New York Football Giants welcomed back a legendary player onto their team on June 1st. Odell Beckham Jr. was selected as the 12th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Giants, and now 12 years later, he’s in a Big Blue uniform once again. While nostalgia may kick in for New York fans, was this a great idea to sign the former three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver? New York is ready to get back into the upswing for the 2026 season, yet bringing the 33-year-old on the roster is not a good look for them. Not only has general manager Joe Schoen kept signing veteran players to the roster who don’t have any impact for the regular season, but Beckham Jr. has been injury-prone over the past few seasons, more specifically during his time with the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, and Miami Dolphins.

Schoen has been signing veteran players just as old as Beckham over the past couple of seasons. For example, Schoen signed former quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, plus tight end Darren Waller. These players struggled in the Big Blue uniform compared to what they once looked like on other teams. On multiple occasions, the Giants’ general manager has done this, and it’s not a good look for the team.

The Giants and new head coach John Harbaugh have put in a lot of effort to make this team one of the greatest in the league again in 2026. During the Brian Daboll era, Schoen and the New York’s former head coach could not put anything together. The only year they saw success during the Daboll era was in 2022, when the Giants defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL Wild Card Round, but then lost to their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, during the Divisional Round. Since then, New York has sat at the bottom of both the NFC East and the NFC. At the start of this offseason, the Giants looked good on paper, but now that they’ve thrown Beckham into the mix, it may make things harder for New York to work with.

Beckham Jr. had his first run with New York from 2014 to 2018. He started his career strongly during those five years in New York. This three-time Pro Bowler was the 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year and had three consecutive receiving seasons of 1,000 yards from 2014 to 2016. After leaving the Giants, that’s when his downfall began. Beckham Jr. suffered multiple ACL tears and other injuries that set him back. The 33-year-old made his way around the league soon after his tenure with the Giants. Beckham Jr. is certainly not the same player that he was when he entered the league 14 years ago.

There is a chance, however, that even though he signed with New York again, the 12-year veteran may not play. It would be a complete downfall for the general manager once again to bring in a veteran and have him barely play at all, if this is the case. Beckham Jr. may have had great workouts at the New York facility, but that doesn't equate to the work needed on the field. If the 33-year-old cannot pass his physical or keep up with the current players, Beckham Jr. may not make the final cut. The Giants are trying to rebuild a culture they no longer have, and the three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver is not the correct fit for them in 2026.

If Beckham Jr. does not work out in New York again, this may be the end of Schoen's career with the Giants. Schoen's got multiple areas to focus on. Fans and the franchise are quickly growing agitated about how their general manager hasn't been making the right decisions for the team for the past few seasons. Beckham Jr. may surprise everyone and pull through for one last hoorah. However, this could also open his eyes to the fact that it’s time for him to close the chapter on his NFL career.
