Arkansas Outlasts Vanderbilt to Secure 2026 Men's SEC Tournament Basketball Title

This year's 2026 SEC Championship was played between the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vanderbilt, a newly appointed SEC powerhouse team, was looking to win its third SEC Tournament Championship, last won in 2012. The most recent victory by the Commodores came over the Florida Gators in dominant fashion, 91-74. Arkansas, which looked to thwart the Commodores, was coming from a thrilling overtime victory over the Ole Miss Rebels, 93-90. Ultimately, the victor of the 2026 SEC Tournament Championship would be the Arkansas Razorbacks, whose shooting and defensive play would prove too much for the Commodores, with the final score 86-75.

Arkansas drew first blood with a corner three-pointer by forward Trevon Brazile. The Razorbacks took an early lead, but Vandy came to play. Early threes from guard Duke Miles and forward Tyler Nickel gave the Commodores an early two-point lead. Yet forward Billy Richmond III responded. He gave the Razorbacks momentum with an alley-oop dunk lobbed up byDarius Acuff Jr. Richmond then hit a left-handed three-point shot. This gave Arkansas a four-point lead with just over 11 minutes to go in the half.

The Razorbacks pull ahead by seven going into the nine-minute mark. They were nearly perfect in shooting from beyond the arc. Malique Ewin came down with an offensive rebound, but Tyler Tanner stole it. Tanner sank a three-point jump shot, followed by another three from Nickel, which shrank the Razorbacks' seven-point lead to one. Both teams exchanged blows: a tying three-pointer from Miles, followed by a single-dribble pull-up three-pointer in response from Maleek Thomas. Arkansas led by three with just over three and a half minutes to go. Duke Miles excited Vandy fans as he stole the ball, following up with a highlight behind-the-back layup. In the final seconds, Acuff Jr. pulled up with a three-point jump shot, and Nickel responded with a two-point jump shot. Acuff Jr. ended the half with another three-pointer. Arkansas led at the half, 41-39. Point leaders for both teams included Richmond III for Arkansas with 14 and Nickel for Vanderbilt with 13.

The second half opened dramatically, as Vanderbilt committed a flagrant and a shooting foul, allowing Arkansas to take a three-point lead on free throws. Acuff Jr. quickly followed with a three-pointer, extending the lead to four. Tanner’s free throws closed the gap, and Okereke’s three-pointer gave Vanderbilt its first lead of the half. Ewin responded with a put-back, reclaiming the lead for Arkansas. Nickel immediately countered with his own three. Two Commodore free throws and an open layup by Chandler Bing, capitalizing on a Thomas miss, widened Vanderbilt’s margin. Washington’s layup pushed the lead to six, prompting Arkansas to call a 30-second timeout. After the timeout, Acuff Jr.’s layup and Wagner’s three-pointer cut the deficit to one. Wagner’s next three-pointer in the corner gave Arkansas the lead. An 11-0 Razorbacks run, capped by another Acuff Jr. three, put Arkansas ahead 60-55 with 11 minutes remaining.

Two more sets of free throws put Vanderbilt back within one. Brazile takes advantage of an open lane with an easy layup, assisted by Acuff Jr. This increased the Razorbacks' lead by two in a game that had 12 lead changes so far. A flagrant one called on Nick Pringle put the Commodores closer as Arkansas led by one. A shot-clock violation gave the ball back to Arkansas. The team raced down the court, increasing their lead by two as Richmond III made a fast break layup. A series of turnovers occurred for both teams. Ultimately, Arkansas gained possession and followed with an alley-oop by Richmond III, assisted by Acuff Jr. Free throws by Tanner put Vanderbilt within three points. The gap closed after an open three by Nickel. Acuff Jr. responded with three of his own. Tanner added a few more free throws to put the game back within two. A jumpshot by Richmond III fell short as both teams wrestled for the ball. Vanderbilt regained possession with four and a half minutes to go. Acuff Jr. extended the lead to two. Miles responded with a two as well, leading into a Commodores 30-second timeout.

A quick out pass by Acuff Jr. to Brazile, who knocked down the three, sprinted down the court to deny Vanderbilt a basket, making a basket-saving play, blocking the ball out of bounds in the process. However, he was not done yet. Brazile sank yet another three, giving Arkansas their largest lead of the game. Another defensive block by Brazile, who had been all over the court, locked up the game for the Razorbacks, who went on a 12-point run going into the final 40 seconds, ending the game and punching their ticket to the big dance with a final score of 86-75. The Arkansas point leader would be Acuff Jr., who finished with 30 points and 11 assists, giving the Razorbacks their second SEC Championship in school history.
