Big Blues General Managers Extension Puts the Pressure on New York to Deliver in 2026

NFL

The New York Giants' general manager, Joe Schoen, had his contract renewed earlier this offseason to remain with Big Blue. His contract is extended for the next four years, keeping him in place as New York's general manager until at least 2029. Many around the league heard that when the Giants' new head coach, John Harbaugh, was brought in, Schoen would remain general manager. However, he would take a back seat to what Harabugh needed to do to fix this team. If the Giants GM were to step up again, the team would need to prove it can pull through so he can keep his job for the duration of his contract.

The extension of New York’s general manager means that the organization is happy with the direction New York is going. It’s not an old team; however, it’s not a brand-new rookie team as it was in the 2024 season. This is a shift away from the question of whether Schoen is going to get tossed out, which has been the focus for a while. The offseason has made many changes to what this team was, and those changes will now be especially noticeable in the coaching staff and the front office. The conversation has now shifted to how he and Harbaugh may have developed a winning roster.

Schoen had only one winning season, in 2022, when former quarterback Daniel Jones was still on the team. Since then, this two-time Super Bowl-winning franchise has struggled to make any plays at all or even try to make roster moves happen during the offseason. New York’s general manager had two really great NFL Drafts the past two years. Schoen, with Harbaugh's help, has made it a point to pick players who are actually needed by the team. Former coach Brian Daboll and he have a little bit of credit for pulling Jaxson Dart, who was not supposed to play until the middle of the 2025 NFL season.

With a really fantastic draft in 2026, this team needs to bring the heat in order for things to stay the same between this season and the next one. Big Blue has spent a lot of time working on its offensive line, defensive line, and special teams. With the help of Harabugh, the team has brought in monster players such as Arvell Reese and Isaiah Likley, among others, who have a history of pulling it together in regular-season games. New York should also be able to put up a much better record than they have in the past two seasons. Schoen and Harabugh have put their heads together to make this work, and the bonus for the general manager is that his stars, Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers, will be returning for the upcoming season. Hopefully, this will help with the pressure the team has been under.

This year won’t be considered a rebuild for New York. It will be more of a trial-and-error year to see what the strongest pieces of this puzzle are. Harbaugh and Schoen need to agree on who stays and who needs to hit the bench this coming season. The Giants’ general manager has some knowledge under his belt now, but if New York does not make the postseason this year, Schoen may be out of a job and looking for another team to join. The pressure for this team is officially on.
