Why the 2026 Blue Jays Rookie Third Baseman Deserves a Starting All-Star Spot

MLB

June 2026 American League Rookie of the Month Kazuma Okamoto entered the second round of all-star voting just behind June AL Player of the Month Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays. The rule is that the player with the most votes gets the starting spot, and with only 69,348 votes separating them, either man could come out on top when the roster is announced at 7:30 p.m. EST. on July 4th. Caminero has a bit of an edge, having been an all-star last season, but Okamoto’s rookie status can be deceiving. The 30-year-old spent ten years playing Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan before his MLB debut, giving him seven more years of experience than the 22-year-old. It's up to fans to interpret whether three years of MLB experience can beat 10 years of overseas experience.

Just like many Japanese players taking the league by storm, the Blue Jays’ third baseman needed time to feel comfortable in this new league. This has not stopped him from leading his team with 19 home runs and 54 RBIs. Okamoto is tied for 11th-most home runs in the entire MLB as well. For Toronto, he is second in runs and walks, third in hits and slugging percentage, and near the top of many other stat categories. Unfortunately, his competitor is slightly above him in all of these. Still, the Jays fanbase has already proven their power by giving second baseman Ernie Clement a well-deserved starting all-star spot with the most votes of any AL player.

In addition to his offense, Okamoto is also phenomenal at his position. The Blue Jays’ third baseman constantly makes game-changing or game-saving plays when his team needs them most. He is also considered a utility player, able to cover first base when five-time all-star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. needs a rare break. It’s safe to say signing the Japanese free agent this offseason was a great response to losing two-time all-star Bo Bichette. It’s no longer too early to tell what a positive impact the 30-year-old will have on Toronto for years to come, and if not this season, the starting all-star spot will be his in no time.
