On Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes will head to Chapel Hill for a matchup against a six-time Super Bowl Champion, Bill Belichick-coached UNC Tar Heels team. The Hurricanes are ranked as the top team in the nation and will look to stay on top of the AP Poll for the rest of the 2026 season. UNC heads into this game at 4-3, most recently falling just shy against Syracuse in a 31-30 loss. Can the Hurricanes defeat the Tar Heels during Week Nine in Chapel Hill to move to 8-0 on the season?
Miami’s offense is what has kept this team undefeated throughout the 2026 campaign. The Hurricanes average the most points per game, with more than 44 points a game. Last week, Miami toppled the Pittsburgh Panthers 52-23 and will look to do the same this Saturday in Chapel Hill. Canes quarterback Darian Mensah has been the most accurate quarterback in college football all year and still has a great chance of beating Bo Nix’s 2023 completion percentage record. At nearly an 81% completion percentage, the 21-year-old has unlocked this offense and brought it to levels head coach Mario Cristobal only could have dreamed of. Alongside Malachi Toney, arguably the best receiver in college football, the Hurricanes have nearly obliterated every opponent they’ve faced.
At 4-3, UNC has turned it around after a 4-8 season a year ago. Although they have three losses, two of those losses came by eight points or less, and in one loss they went toe-to-toe with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish before falling by 11. Two weeks ago, they won the Victory Bell after defeating their biggest rivals, the Duke Blue Devils, 24-20. Billy Edwards Jr. is at the helm of this team, throwing for 1,531 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions this season. Jordan Shipp has established himself as the top receiver for this team with 543 receiving yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, defensive tackle Xavier Lewis leads the team with seven sacks, Derek McDonald has a total of 71 tackles, and safety Gregory Smith III has recorded three interceptions.
UNC’s resilience has grown from over a year ago. They can compete with some of college football’s best. The offense must get quick, easy points on the board, pressuring Miami’s defense every drive, while putting nerves on the Hurricanes offense to make this Week Nine matchup a shootout. Miami must do the same, but continue to build their lead and never let their foot off the gas pedal. If the Hurricanes can score three or four touchdowns per quarter, there is no way Edwards Jr. and the rest of the UNC offense can keep up with the eliteness of two Heisman Trophy candidates in Mensah and Toney.
Miami should continue their undefeated streak and stay as the top team in the nation. UNC struggled against Pittsburgh back on October 10th but were able to pull off a 21-17 win. The Hurricanes just shredded the Panthers a week ago. I have no doubt Miami pulls off another huge win in a dominating fashion. Miami needs to take the Tar Heels seriously and get the win because next week the Hurricanes face their biggest challenge yet in Notre Dame, so the focus, energy, and winning mentality must be there in Chapel Hill before the Canes head to South Bend.
