Can the Jets Offense Improve This Season Despite Early Passing Issues?

NFL

To put it plainly, the New York Jets’ offense during the 2024 season was worse than anyone expected, especially since before the season, it seemed like everything would fall into place. A disappointing season from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the lack of accountability taken by the offense as a whole, and the inability of Breece Hall to return to the player he was in his rookie season, combined with a penalty-filled defense, summed up the lackluster year for the Jets. Along with a new coaching regime and new players added to the fold, the Jets are entering 2025 with new expectations. However, there are still quite a few reasons to question whether the Jets can be successful this season.

In last night’s loss to the New York Giants, the offensive starters had their fair share of issues. Justin Fields once again saw the field for only one drive, but didn’t see the same success as he did in the win against Green Bay. Fields went one-for-five, with only four passing yards. Although Garrett Wilson has had great seasons since being drafted by the Jets in 2022, there’s a chance that he sees fewer targets this season despite a more impressive overall offense. In addition, there are currently unknowns behind Wilson in receiver depth, which will be solved in the coming weeks.

While head coach Aaron Glenn is bringing the running back by committee approach to New York this season, it’s fair to wonder if the Jets will be able to create noise on the offense with just the run game. Last season, the Jets' offense finished 32nd in the league in rush attempts, so it’s safe to assume that they will be ranked much higher this season. Fields is a very mobile quarterback, and certainly much more so than Rodgers, so he will be running just as much as the trio of running backs. However, with a stacked AFC, will the Jets be able to score with just the running aspect of the offense, or will they once again struggle to put points on the board like they have the past few seasons?
