Can Tommy DeVito Hold His Spot as New Quarterbacks Arrive in New York?

NFL

The Giants have officially four quarterbacks on the roster for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Their quarterback room seems a little larger than it should be. Tommy DeVito thought he was going to be this season's starting quarterback. However, with the signing of Jameis Winston, Russell Wilson, and Jaxson Dart, it puts a lot of things into question for where he is going to be with the Giants. Adding all of these new quarterbacks may put his future in New York in jeopardy altogether.

The Giants signed him to another one-year contract earlier this offseason as an exclusive rights free agent. This simply means that any player with fewer than three seasons and an expired contract can be offered an extension. This contract does not just go to anyone, but mostly to the players who have shown that they have potential but are not going to be starters all the time. At the end of the Giants’ season, general manager Joe Schoen had spoken with him about being the Giants’ current and only quarterback before they brought in everyone else.

DeVito is on a one-year deal that is worth $1.03 million, the minimum for a player with the experience that this 26-year-old quarterback has. He’s not getting anything guaranteed from New York. However, with the plan that they currently have in place of Wilson starting and Dart being number three, DeVito may be pushed down all the way to number four. The other option is that the Giants may even break his contract and cut him altogether.

He’s been with the Giants for two seasons, and now he is coming back for a third. He started in six games during his first season, three of those in which he won. He started in two games the following season, in which the Giants unfortunately lost both of those during his starts. He’s a decent backup quarterback for the team when he has the chance to start on the field. It’s the decision that has to be made by the Giants as to what they are going to do with him. DeVito knows he wants to stay in New York for another year. However, if he can’t due to the quarterback room becoming as full as it is, so be it. He will just have to be picked up in free agency by another team.
