Can Two Georgia Rookies Carve a Role on the 2026 Falcons Offense?
Before the 2026 NFL Draft took place, one of the glaring weaknesses on the Atlanta Falcons' roster was their lack of explosive playmakers outside of the sticks. There was a distinct lack of speed and versatility that would keep NFL defenses on their toes. However, two Georgia boys look to make a stamp on what could be a dangerous Atlanta offense for the upcoming season. Running back Cash Jones and wide receiver Zachariah Branch have the tools, but what can they provide for the Falcons' offense next season?
As stated before, the Atlanta offense has struggled to get going sometimes due to its lack of speedy playmakers at receiver. It was especially noticeable when star wide receiver Drake London missed time due to injury. With the selection of Branch in the third round and picking up Jones as an undrafted free agent, head coach Kevin Stefanski is looking for players to step up and fill the role that was lacking for Atlanta the season prior.
Zachariah Branch is a truly gifted speedster. Underutilized as a legit pass catcher in Georgia, the USC transfer was heavily used in screens and gadget plays during his time with the Bulldogs. With his mix of speed and agility, he has been deemed “Baby Tyreek Hill” by his teammates in Flowery Branch during training camp. Coach Stefanski spoke to the media about the speedster and said, “You don’t find guys that can move like him very often. He’s versatile, and that’s what sets him apart.” Branch can line up almost anywhere behind the line of scrimmage and always be a threat because of his elite burst. He will be utilized in a similar way that he was in UGA, not necessarily a boundary threat, but someone who can move around the line of scrimmage to keep defenses guessing. Not to mention that the versatile offensive weapon will also be utilized heavily in Atlanta’s special teams. The former Bulldog was an elite punt and kick returner during his collegiate years and will find a way on the field during the 2026 regular season.
Cash Jones is a name that has been getting spoken about as training camp transitions into preseason. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent, he has recently been getting reps with the second-team offense during drills. Jones has taken a similar role to his Georgia teammate, serving as a flexible, positionless player for the Atlanta offense. He’s transitioned to a wide receiver role, as he mostly caught screens in Athens rather than lining up as the primary back. The Georgia alum has been turning heads with his skills despite going undrafted. Though his role and place on the roster are still yet to be determined, the veteran running back has been getting nothing but praise from the coaching staff. Coach Stefanski called the former UGA prospect a “Very, very smart football player”, praising his versatility and adaptability with the new offensive scheme.
Versatility is key for both offensive targets. It’s still unknown how much of the field Branch and especially Jones will see, but they can still be impactful to this Falcons’ offense. Atlanta needs all the offensive weapons they can get with their extremely concerning and questionable quarterback room. If the Dirty Birds want to see the postseason again for the first time in almost a decade, they’ll have to call on playmakers throughout the roster to get it done. With the versatile Georgia duo, they can make an electric offense to take the NFC South crown for the first time since 2016.
