Can Two Top-Tier Teams Overtake Arsenal’s Premier League Lead?

The 2025-2026 Premier League season only has 11 matches left as play enters the 27th match week. Can Arsenal sustain their number one position in the Premier League table, or will they bottle the league like they did the past three seasons? Arsenal has had the Premier League trophy so close in their grasp only for Man City to steal it away twice and for defending champions, Liverpool, to take victory last season. Could this season be the year they finally win the Premier League? Or will Man City and Aston Villa manage to close the gap and overtake Arsenal for the win?

Arsenal’s Next Five Matches

Arsenal recently had inconsistent performances, drawing 2-2 with bottom-of-the-table Wolves and defeating their rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, 1-4 at their own stadium. For their next five matches in the Premier League, they have some matches that are a given for the three points, and others they will have to fight to make sure they secure all points rather than dropping from winning positions. Arsenal will face Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on March 1st at 11:30 a.m. EST. This match will be an exciting one as two of the Big Six teams will face off; however, Chelsea has suffered some blows in the Premier League by drawing with newly-promoted Burnley and Leeds United. At the same time, consistency has not favored any of the Premier League teams this season, so this match could be up in the air. Arsenal must travel down to the South Coast as they face Brighton at the Amex Stadium on March 4th at 2:30 p.m. EST. The Seagulls are one of the teams plagued with inconsistencies this season, and Arsenal have confidence they can beat them again after winning 2-1 at the Emirates. Arsenal will take a break from league play and have an easy match in the FA Cup against Mansfield Town on March 7th at 7:15 a.m. EST. This might be an easy match for them, but they are playing more and more matches than some of their Premier League rivals due to their further progression in tournaments. This might bode well for their hunger for trophies, but it could bring an injury crisis if players’ minutes are not managed correctly.

After coming off from FA Cup play, they will face Everton at home on March 15th at 10:00 a.m. EST. Everton have been winless in their past five matches, and Arsenal will hope to extend their streak to six matches. Arsenal will have another break from the Premier League when they face Man City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 22nd at 12:30 p.m. EST. It is another opportunity for silverware, and a chance for revenge, as Man City has shut them out from winning the coveted Premier League title twice in the past three seasons. Their next match is against Bournemouth at home on April 11th, and the time is to be determined. The Bournemouth match may have high team morale as they won the Carabao Cup, or they will be back to focusing on gaining more points and making the gap larger in the table after letting a chance at silverware slip through their fingers. Depending on the outcome of the Carabao final, Arsenal will be thirsting for revenge or trying to defend their winning position in the table as they go against Manchester City once again. They will have to fly to Manchester and face the pressure from the Mancunian crowd on April 18th. Currently, Arsenal has a five-point lead on Man City, having played one more match. Arsenal will need to keep their focus on the Premier League trophy despite being pulled in different directions with the FA Cup match in the fifth round and the Carabao Cup final. Looking at their upcoming fixtures in the Premier League, they could secure nine points by easily beating Brighton, Everton, and Bournemouth. However, the matches against Chelsea and Man City are ones where they could walk away with one point or nothing. The players will have to be at their best and maintain their match-fitness and lack of injuries so as not to derail Arsenal’s trajectory and desire to finally win the Premier League title.

Man City’s Next Five Matches

Manchester City won their past three matches in the Premier League. They have managed to close the gap in points from their second position in the table to only five points. Their five upcoming fixtures bode well for them. They could secure 12 points from matches they should easily win. Manchester City will have to travel to Leeds United’s Elland Road on February 28th at 12:30 p.m. EST. In the reverse fixture, Leeds almost kept the match at a draw, but City had a stoppage-time winner. Going against Leeds should be an easy win for the in-form Man City team. They will be determined to gain more points on the table leaders. They cannot let easier matches get away from them and drop precious points, especially as the season is coming to a close. Another reverse fixture that was almost a draw was against Nottingham Forest. This match is at home for City, and it will take place on March 4th at 2:30 p.m. EST. Forest’s form has not been the best as they sit 17th in the table. Man City will look to put their opposition team deeper into relegation trouble with a win to secure the three points. Man City are also in the FA Cup, and they will have to go against fellow Premier League side Newcastle. Man City and Newcastle are meeting up for the fifth time this season as they have their standard two matches for the Premier League, two games for the Carabao Cup legs in the semifinal, and now they are meeting in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Their next Premier League match is against West Ham United at the London Stadium. It takes place on March 14th at 8:30 a.m. EST. West Ham is another team in the relegation zone, so City will be looking to take advantage of their poor form. Their next possible match is at home against Crystal Palace; however, this match has been postponed. The match-up between Man City and the FA Cup champions could be a challenge for the home team, and could be revenge for City as Palace beat them in last year’s FA Cup final. However, the Eagles' form is another team plagued by inconsistencies. They are also stretched thin by having to compete in the Europa Conference League. Another break from the Premier League comes as they go against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final. Like Arsenal, Man City will have to manage players’ minutes and their health in order to get through to the end of the season. Man City will have to travel to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge on April 11th, and the time is to be determined. At the beginning of the season, Chelsea looked strong enough to challenge for the title, but they have since dropped off after the sacking of their manager, Enzo Maresca. Of the upcoming five matches for Man City, beating Chelsea will be extremely important to get points and keep their opposition from rising up the Premier League table. Man City have the players and the strategy to overtake Arsenal for first place. It all depends on whether Arsenal can keep their winning form to block Man City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, from winning the title for the seventh time.

Aston Villa’s Next Five Matches

Aston Villa currently sit third in the Premier League table. Unlike the other two teams vying and fighting for the top spot in the table, Villa are not involved in any other competitions domestically or internationally. Their players will be better rested, and they will have a targeted focus on the Premier League, as this is their only chance of a trophy. Their next match is away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 27th at 3:00 p.m. EST. This should be a match Aston Villa are expected to win; however, their last match against newly-promoted Leeds United only ended in a 1-1 draw. Therefore, Villa will have to improve their form and not get overly confident against teams they are expected to beat. A challenge will be posed to them in the form of Chelsea, who are in the top five of the table. This primetime home match for Villa against Chelsea is on March 4th at 2:30 p.m. EST. Villa will hope that Chelsea beats Arsenal and Man City in their meetings, as it opens the doorway for them to gain more points as their opposition loses ground in the title race. Interim head coach for Man United, Michael Carrick, will hope to kill another giant in Aston Villa, as they previously defeated Arsenal at the Emirates. This match will be unpredictable with the new manager’s style against Unai Emery’s favored quick counter-attacks. It starts on March 15th at 10:00 a.m. EST. Aston Villa need all of the points they can get as they have work to do by closing the 10-point gap.

West Ham is Villa's next obstacle, and the match will take place on March 22nd at 10:15 a.m. EST. This match should be an easy win for Villa since West Ham is in the relegation zone, but their desperation to stay in the Premier League might be their motivation to beat the third-place team. Another team currently on the brink of relegation is Nottingham Forest, and they will play Villa at the City Ground on April 11th, with the time to be determined. Next, Villa hosts Sunderland on April 18th; similarly, the kickoff is yet to be determined. Both these two matches should be wins for Aston Villa, and they have to gain those six points from these matches. Their fight for the Premier League title is more difficult than City’s as they have to close a ten-point gap. However, Aston Villa have the advantage that they do not have to play matches during the week or outside Premier League competition. Their players will be more rested than Arsenal and City’s; however, the downside is that they will not get outside silverware from other competitions. Only being in the Premier League gives Villa the privilege of being able to focus solely on their campaign rather than being pulled in two other directions.

Overall, Arsenal must be consistent and not let their past catch up with them. They must stay focused on the Premier League while juggling two other chances at trophies. Man City has the luxury of having nothing to lose as they don’t have the pressure from fans to finally win the trophy, as they have won the Premier League six times under Guardiola and completed the treble in the 2022-2023 season, which is winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League all in one season. They have the capacity to overtake Arsenal and win the league from behind, especially if Arsenal’s form declines as it has in the past. Aston Villa will be hungry for the Premier League trophy as they are out of all other competitions. This is both a positive and a negative for the team as they can dedicate their energy to the Premier League, but only have one route for silverware.
