Chiefs Trade 25-Year-Old All-Pro Cornerback to Rams

NFL

In a blockbuster move, the Kansas City Chiefs have traded star cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for four draft selections. Those picks are a first, fifth, and sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. McDuffie has been in the NFL for four seasons after the Chiefs selected him with the 21st pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. He had a very successful tenure with Kansas City, as he was a First-team All-Pro in 2023 and a Second-team All-Pro in 2024. With the accolades he has accumulated, there is a high likelihood that the Rams give McDuffie a contract extension to lock him in for the foreseeable future.

There should be no surprise that the Rams have made this move, given their general manager, Les Snead’s, recent comments about bolstering the secondary. Last season, the Rams ranked just 19th in passing yards allowed and lost the NFC Championship to their division rival Seattle Seahawks in large part because quarterback Sam Darnold was able to throw for 346 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams are also no strangers to sacrificing draft picks to obtain premium players, as evidenced by their 2019 trade for cornerback Jalen Ramsey and their 2021 trade for quarterback Matthew Stafford. These players were both key in helping the Rams win Super Bowl LVI, and this newest trade will certainly move them closer to winning another championship, once again on their home field in SoFi Stadium.

For the Chiefs, this is also not the first time they have made a trade like this. In 2024, they traded cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick swap. With these picks, the Chiefs selected guard C.J. Hanson in 2024 and defensive end Ashton Gillotte in 2025. The Chiefs initiated the first trade to sidestep a lucrative contract extension for Sneed, and they probably had the same rationale for this move. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, the Chiefs appear to be looking to stock up on draft capital and enter into a rebuild of sorts to get back to their former glory.
