From Panarin to Promise: A New Hope Emerges in the Rangers Retool

NHL

In a Rangers season where there's not much to be proud of overall, the message was clear: it was time to build for a new future. With the retool now in place, fans must say farewell to familiar faces and pick up any prospect they can get. As a season full of darkness continues, a bright spot may have been found as the newest Rangers prospect has begun to rise. Acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in return for Artemi Panarin, the 20-year-old prospect has been on a surge in the Ontario Hockey League. He may not have his ice time in the NHL just yet, but this prospect is looking like a real key to the Rangers' future. The future may be anything but bright for the Blueshirts, but is the sudden rise of Liam Greentree perfect news for the New York Rangers' retooling stage?

Drafted 26th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft by the Kings, Liam Greentree continues his surge with more than 300 career points. As a star forward and captain of the Windsor Spitfires, the 20-year-old is known for his ability to score off the rush from an impressive distance. With an NHL-worthy release, many can say his confidence has been through the roof since day one. Though a star forward no doubt, it was indeed a shaky start to this season for Greentree, having just gone through surgery before the season began. His absence in the development camp really showed, making him unable to stand out to begin the season. Rough, no doubt, but it doesn't seem to be the case anymore, as Greentree's numbers have surged since the trade was made. Since Panarin's farewell, the first-round pick has picked up 10 goals and six assists in the span of 10 games. It's safe to say Greentree is returning to his usual form, the kind the Blueshirts need for the future. A healthy prospect is one of the most important aspects, but what else really draws him as a key part of the future?

The prospect's shot, no doubt, helps him stand out, but there's much more than just the release. When under pressure, his ability to remain calm and patient makes him quite valuable. Greentree knows a thing or two about puck protection, and with the kind of possession he has on the ice, he's much more valuable than just a prospect who can finish. Along with standing out on the ice, he's proven to stake his claim off the ice as well with his leadership as captain of Windsor. Time and time again, he's proven with his skill and size that he's not the kind of player to mess around with.

Where you excel, there are always areas that need improvement. Confidence is always the most valuable thing to use on ice, but it may also lead you to do a little too much. Greentree, at times, can do exactly that, being a little too fancy when the play he's making doesn't need to be made. Choices like this often lead to dangerous moments for the opposing team, forcing turnovers and putting them on the defensive. Another key area for improvement, and the more obvious one, is his acceleration on the ice. The Canadian prospect may be able to finish, but he seems to lack the speed on ice to leave defenders in the dust. As Greentree's numbers already surge, just think of the kind of numbers he could put up with a little increase in speed; he'll surely need it if he's to keep up with the kind of speed in the NHL. The young prospect has his confidence, as well as his areas for improvement, and with his time in the OHL soon ending, what does the future look like for him and the Rangers?

Although he's impressed a few with his abilities, fans shouldn't expect Greentree to hop on the NHL ice too quickly. If he can earn himself some ice time in the NHL next season, he may do well on the line with another fellow Rangers prospect. Pairing him with Gabe Perreault could potentially develop them into quite a dangerous duo, and the addition of Alexis Lafreniere on that line could do wonders for all three. As the Rangers look to make way for the next era of talent, it's not too early to say Liam Greentree has the potential to be their next key asset, and with his numbers surging at the right moment, has a tiny bit of light begun to shine for the Rangers' future?
