Cleveland Browns Bring in Failed Former Jacksonville Jaguars General Manager in Questionable Move

NFL

In a move that has left Cleveland Browns fans puzzled, the franchise is bringing in former San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke in what is being described as a “consultant-like role.” Football fans will remember Baalke’s terrible two stints as general manager, in which San Francisco fell from Super Bowl contender to bottom-feeder, and the Jaguars flamed out to a 25-43 record during his tenure leading the franchise from 2021 to 2024. The Browns are currently trying to rescue themselves from an ugly era of football, leaving local analysts and fans unsure what Baalke really adds to the front office. General manager Andrew Berry is also coming off a draft that has been widely praised by the football punditry, with offensive additions like tackle Spencer Fano and secondary help with safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, which further contributes to the mystery of Baalke joining the Browns.

Baalke has been a front-office presence since he first burst onto the scene as a scout with the New York Jets in 1998. Throughout his tenure drafting in the first round, Baalke has shown love to defensive players, as his inaugural first-round draft selection was Aldon Smith. However, he has also made head-scratching decisions in hindsight. Baalke once drafted former Illinois wide receiver A.J. Jenkins over future Hall of Famers Bobby Wagner and Lavonte David, the latter of whom recently retired as one of the best players in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One of the key headlines that dominated the Baalke era in San Francisco was his testy relationship with then-head coach Jim Harbaugh, who went on to leave for the University of Michigan after ownership opted to stick with the general manager. Harbaugh’s departure led to an awful stretch of football from 2015 to 2016, in which the Niners went 7-25. San Francisco continued to draft poorly under Baalke’s direction, and the same ownership that sided with him ultimately fired the Wisconsin native in 2017.

In 2021, Jacksonville’s ownership group decided to roll the dice and give Baalke a second shot at being an NFL general manager.  This decision totally backfired,  as questionable draft choices and a botched head coaching hire led to Baalke getting fired once more. His first head coach, college football legend Urban Meyer, flamed out and was fired after starting with a record of 2-11. Receiving another first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Baalke pulled the trigger on Georgia’s Travon Walker, passing over Aidan Hutchinson, who has gone on to produce at a significantly higher rate than Walker with the Detroit Lions. After another poor season in 2024, the Jaguars departed with Baalke.

Coupled with his murky track record, Browns fans may have issues with the Baalke hiring after Cleveland just got rid of the current Colorado Rockies president of baseball operations, Paul DePodesta. DePodesta factored into the Browns' drafting processes from 2016 to 2025 and was a huge part of the much-maligned Deshaun Watson trade. Filling DePodesta’s role as another advisor in Cleveland’s front office, Baalke may be perceived as another clueless member of the Browns' decision-making process. Although he provides decades of experience, Baalke is going to bring eyes and a heap of doubt to a front office that is trying to establish a new culture and get back to the postseason.
