Who Are the Frontrunners to Cut Down the Nets in the NCAA Men’s Basketball 26-27 Season?

The transfer portal is continuing as we extend further into the offseason of college hoops, but some teams begin to stick out as potential champion favorites. With no surprises coming out of the gate, the main programs that have a shot at it all next year have been consistently at the top for the past few seasons. Programs such as Duke, Florida, Michigan, and UConn are the main four. Three of these four programs have hoisted a National Championship trophy within the past three seasons.

The frontrunner is Duke, with their elite recruiting every season. They always seem to bring in the next big star and future NBA first-overall picks, such as Cooper Flagg, Paolo Banchero, and Zion Williamson. They also hold the record for total lottery picks and top three picks since 2014. Bringing in top talent is what Duke is all about; however, they have struggled to go all the way and haven’t won a National Championship since 2015. Regardless, it is still a powerhouse program bringing in the best players in the country, so you can never count them out. They currently lead ESPN analytics as the favorite to cut down the net as they hope to break the curse and return to the biggest stage.

Florida was elite in this offseason, building the most impressive roster in the country. Of course, most of the roster just stayed from the previous year. They still have the most experience out of any team in the country and have all the pieces needed to make another return to the championship. Their roster currently has five of their top six players already experienced in the National Championship, winning it with Florida in 2025. They are also trying to add Denzel Aberdeen, who would make that six. The Gators came up short this past season, falling in the second round to Iowa, but the team still had a strong year. They clinched the final one seed in the tournament after thriving in SEC play. They have the players and the coaching staff, who say they won’t go all the way again?

The defending National Champions, Michigan, are still considered a top team. They lost four key players due to eligibility for the draft, along with Winters Grady and Malick Kordel, to the transfer portal. Coach Dusty May has a complete turnover on the roster for the upcoming season, but things are still hopeful for the Wolverines. The team still has high hopes for next season, bringing in transfers and recruits that could continue the dominance Michigan displayed last season. Moustapha Thiam is a seven-foot-two transfer from Cincinnati who can help control the game from the paint, securing rebounds and locking down defenders. Even though the roster took quite a hit after the National Championship, they still have key players who can help them return for a second straight year.

The UConn Huskies are another program that always seems to be in the running when it comes to March Madness. Dan Hurley has built a program that always seems to succeed, no matter who is on it. The team will lose its superstar Alex Karaban after he helped bring back-to-back championships to Storrs in 2023 and 2024. Other key losses include Tarris Reed Jr. and Solomon Ball. Ball will not play in this upcoming season due to a wrist injury. They still have key players returning, such as Braylon Mullins, along with bringing in transfers from the portal. No matter who the starting five may be, or who comes off the bench, Hurley will prepare them for a hard-fought season. He already scheduled a regular-season game against Duke in Las Vegas, which will bring these two programs to the court in the early half of the season. Who knows, they might meet up in late March again for the second year in a row?
