Could the 2026 Warriors Trade Down on Draft Night?

NBA

We are now just a few days away from the 2026 NBA Draft, and the Warriors will have some decisions to make on Tuesday. Per Brett Siegel of ClutchSports, Golden State has already had discussions surrounding a possible move out of the 11th pick. The team is unlikely to select a higher position than their current one, so those discussions would likely mean moving down and gaining more capital. At the same time, some may wonder how much better the Golden State Warriors would get by picking up two lower-shelf talents, rather than a top 11 player according to their draft board.

Keeping Every Option on the Table

Before I begin any analysis, I truly do believe that the Warriors’ strategy can follow either course before or during the draft. I could see Mike Dunleavy’s front office staying put and continuing to finalize their list of best players or willingly exploring a pick trade. It’s hard to imagine that they would heavily lean towards either pre-draft game plan, because a smart organization would never fully close off any possibilities. The Four-Time NBA Champions didn't achieve their titles in eight years through just player performance, but also with their clever and praised management. With that said, there are already some events that have hinted at Golden State’s course of action thus far.

The Charlotte Trade Talks

Last week, the Bay Area Powerhouse reached out to the Hornets for a possible swap of their draft pick for both of Charlotte’s first-round selections. Per Siegel, the Hornets rejected the idea, but that won’t necessarily discourage the team from the Bay from listening to other talks. However, I think this perceived approach may be a smokescreen. If the price is right, the title-hungry Warriors will obviously inquire more about making a move they’d consider favorable. Any successful organization would.

Why Moving Down May Not Make Sense

I just find it hard to believe that a franchise built on winning would actively seek dropping further in the draft, because they are in a state of winning now. Going for the quantity of multiple selections over the quality of a plug-and-play rookie makes little sense. Since the team is supposedly attempting to maximize the little time their aging core has remaining, they should look to add the best player available when the clock turns to them. I still believe a trade is in the cards, but if I had to pick which tactic the team would pursue a few days before the big day, I would guess the 2026 Golden State Warriors would choose 11th, per the lottery results.
