Is a Falcons All-Pro Safety Staying Beyond the 2026 Season?
As the NFL offseason drags on for the fans, teams across the league are still moving pieces around and paying talent to increase their playoff hopes. Atlanta has been at the forefront of said offseason moves. With the extension of wide receiver Drake London and having to sign the inevitable Bijan Robinson extension, they will have to decide on the captain of their defense’s future with the team. With the depth and potential at their safety position, along with the looming contract extensions, the decision is a lot harder to make than it may look.
The Falcon’s 29-year-old All-Pro safety, Jessie Bates, is entering the final year of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent by the end of the 2026 season. At face value, the decision is quite obvious for the ‘Dirty Birds’: pay the man what he’s worth. Bates is the captain of the defense and a former three-time All-Pro, so the answer is simple, right? Well, it would be that simple if the Falcons didn’t have two other massive extensions breathing down their neck. The aforementioned and very likely Bijan Robinson extension and the more questionable Kyle Pitts extension are sitting right in front of their face as well. Pitts and especially Robinson are integral pieces to the Falcons’ offense; their potential extensions may jeopardize the heart of ATL's secondary spot on the team after the 2026 season. We’ve gotten very little word from general manager Ian Cunningham or head coach Kevin Stefanski about the Falcons' Last Line of Defense’s contract extension. Bates himself has been relatively quiet as well, mostly focusing on being a leader for the team’s defense during offseason training camps.
The All-Pro has been leading a safety group that has been steadily growing into one of the most lethal units in the NFL. Under Bates’ wing and his right-hand man is former 2025 third-round pick, Xavier Watts. Watts finished his rookie campaign with 96 total tackles and five interceptions, placing fourth in Defensive Rookie of the Year votes. He was one of two Falcons to receive votes for the award, the other being his teammate on the defensive line, James Pearce. If Pearce can keep a clear head, he, Watts, and fellow 2025 draft pick Jalon Walker will be the cornerstones for a potentially elite defensive unit. Safe to say, the safety depth is one of the bright spots on the budding Falcons’ defense. 2023 seventh-round pick DeMarcco Hellams was one of the bright spots on some pretty atrocious Falcons defenses when he got a chance to play. Atlanta went out and added even more safety depth during the 2026 offseason, acquiring Sydney Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles in a trade. The safety room has depth, and if Bates’ contract is too expensive, it may leave the Falcons with no choice but to let their defensive catalyst walk after this upcoming season. It would be in Atlanta’s best interest to figure this extension out sooner rather than later if they don’t want to lose arguably the best defender they’ve had in this past decade.
