Devils Goalie Out: What It Means for Their Net and Defensive Strategy

NHL

Only three games into the regular season, and the Devils have been dealt an early setback as veteran starting goaltender Jacob Markström is expected to be out for the next couple of weeks due to a lower-body injury. Markström sustained the injury during their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, with 20 seconds left in the game after relieving Jake Allen. Fortunately, he managed to finish out the game, though it was clear he was in discomfort. His absence will now force the Devils to lean on their goaltending depth and test how well their backup options can hold the crease.

In response to Markström’s injury, New Jersey has recalled Nico Daws from their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. This 24-year-old goalie has been recalled to play for the Devils in the past, showing flashes of promise in limited appearances, especially last season when he posted a 1.60 GAA and .939 save percentage over six appearances. Daws has continued to develop while playing steadily for Utica, and this call-up allows him to prove he deserves a permanent spot in the NHL. Meanwhile, Allen, who left the Columbus game due to cramping, remains available and will be the starter goalie while Markström is out. The Devils had some trouble finding a reliable goaltender in recent years, so this stretch without Markström could serve as a crucial test for their depth in the crease.

With Jacob Markström sidelined, the Devils’ defense will face increased pressure to perform at a high level. The defense will need to be sharper, especially in high-danger areas, because goalies behind weak coverage are more vulnerable. Every turnover could be magnified, especially against fast, skilled teams that can capitalize on mistakes. The defense will need to focus on tight gap control, strong positioning, and limiting odd-man rushes to protect their goaltenders. How New Jersey handles this stretch could set the tone for their early-season momentum.

Markström’s absence could be a setback for the Devils, but it also presents an opportunity for the team to test itself. How Jake Allen and Nico Daws perform in the coming games will be critical to maintaining early-season momentum. Strong defensive play, combined with disciplined goaltending, could help New Jersey navigate this stretch without losing ground. If the team rises to the challenge, they may come out stronger and more cohesive when Markström returns.
