Is the Eagles Defense Still a Powerhouse?

NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles have always been known for their talented defense. With a dominant front seven, they've long strived to be one of the best units in the league. Coming off their Super Bowl championship, the defense remained a top-ranked group in 2024. As this season unfolds, a noticeable drop-off has begun to show. With missed tackles piling up and their once-feared reputation fading, one question looms large: Is the Eagles' defense still a powerhouse — or has the league finally caught up?

Starting their season undefeated, the Eagles' defense appeared to have not missed a beat. After back-to-back losses during Week Five and Week Six of the season, doubts began to surface. With Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Darius Slay Jr. all departing — landing with the New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Steelers — the ripple effect has been undeniable. Their departure wasn't the only thing that hurt the Eagles this season. With Jalen Carter and Quinyon Mitchell injured during these weeks, you can see the cracks beginning to show.

If the Eagles want to reclaim their identity, it starts with accountability. Their talent is still there; they just need to find their spark again. Jordan Davis, being one of their strongest players, must be a full-time force all game. Stopping passes, getting tackles, and showing dominance on the field. With Nakobe Dean's return in Week Six, the team gains versatility and leadership, giving the Eagles' defense a much-needed powerhouse on the field.

The coaching adjustments are equally crucial. The Eagles need to start mixing things up a little to scare the others and remind them of who they are. As the Eagles can no longer rely on the four-man front, they need something new and strategic to help them finish strong. Whether it's seeing Jihaad Campbell get a couple of snaps or trusting younger players, one thing is clear: the defense can no longer play conservative football.

As the Eagles make their way to Minnesota to take on the Vikings, they have a lot to prove this week. After a horrible loss to the New York Giants and Denver Broncos, fans had plenty to be upset about. We questioned whether they would bounce back, and boy, were we wrong. This week in Minnesota will be another test: can the Eagles rise and show the league who they are? This is more than just a game; it's a statement that could define the rest of their season.
