Did the Bears QB Show That He Arrived in Sunday’s Game?

NFL

On Sunday afternoon, the Chicago Bears defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 31-14, at Soldier Field. This is the Bears’ first win of the season, putting them at 1-2 on the year and giving Ben Johnson his first win as a head coach. The defense had two interceptions and a much better performance from last week, shutting down quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense. Despite the injuries the Bears have faced, the backups on defense stepped up and delivered a performance they can carry forward. The most impressive player from the game, however, came from the hands of the Bears quarterback.

Caleb Williams threw for 298 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions. This ties Williams’ career high for touchdowns in a single game, and puts him back in the win column for the first time since January against the Green Bay Packers earlier this year. Williams spread the ball around to nearly every single one of his receivers, with D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze, and Luther Burden III all earning touchdowns. Odunze now has four touchdowns on the season, which is already more than last year, when he had three total. Tight end Cole Kmet would also get his first touchdown of the season, alongside Moore and Burden. Bears fans are celebrating the win and the first real look at what this offense could be with Ben Johnson, but also the potential beginning of a fantastic career for Williams going forward. Is the consistency going to continue?

Despite the season beginning with two disappointing losses for the Bears, Williams still performed at a good level when compared to his first two games last season. While there have been misses and frustrating plays created by the quarterback, the growth has become apparent under the coaching of Johnson. There was a mix of both run and pass, more plays targeted to Williams’ strengths, something Bears fans begged for last year under head coach Matt Eberflus. With this win under their belt, the confidence was much needed for both the team and Williams. They will now look to carry this momentum, as they’ll head to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders.
