Does Dallas Have New Hope in the Backfield?
The Cowboys escaped with a game-winning field goal in a 40-37 overtime thriller against the New York Giants. A total of 41 points were scored in the fourth quarter alone, making this game an early contender for the season's best game. The Dallas offense displayed newfound energy after managing only 10 points in the first half, with unexpected hero Javonte Williams stepping up to lead the Cowboys. Williams had 97 rushing yards on 18 carries, with his best play being a 30-yard touchdown run, maneuvering through blockers and finishing the play.
In the past two offseasons, Dallas has been heavily scrutinized for not wanting to pursue a running back in free agency, with Derrick Henry being the prime example in 2023. This offseason, Dallas got rid of their roster from last year and went with the approach of signing two veterans and drafting two running backs late in the draft, which raised a lot of questions from the media and the fans. They looked towards former Broncos running back Javonte Williams, who has been struggling with injuries the prior couple of seasons but showed potential in his rookie season. Williams faced scrutiny leading up to Week One's game against the Eagles, especially since he did not participate in the entire preseason. As a result, there were heightened expectations for him to perform, and he has certainly delivered on that so far.
Williams surprised everyone by becoming the first scorer of the NFL season during the Cowboys' spectacular opening drive in Philadelphia. He followed up his initial touchdown with another score during the Cowboys' second drive of the game, marking his second touchdown in his debut with the team. Williams has demonstrated that he still possesses the burst needed for effective running, capable of breaking off runs of over 10 yards, which is precisely what the Cowboys need this season. With Williams playing well, it opens up the field more for the Cowboys, helping them be efficient in the air and on the ground. The emergence of Williams is surprising the NFL and, honestly, the Cowboys as well, and if he can continue to play like this, the Cowboys' issue at running back is solved.
