Early Expectations for the 2026 Red Sox Offseason
Though the shock of the 2026 season coming to a close is still fresh for the Red Sox, hopes, fears, and expectations have already started to develop about their offseason moves. It’s not exactly clear what, if anything, Boston intends to do this winter. Additionally, the MLB lockout expected in December changes all speculation; who knows if there will be a 2027 slate of games to prepare for? However, even with baseball’s immediate future clouded in uncertainty, the echoes of Boston’s final collapse will follow the franchise into every decision made this winter. Nevertheless, the struggles of the last year, especially the bitter end, have many voices eager for big shake-ups.
The offense, more than anything, is what spelled doom for the Sox in their Wild Card round defeat. The lack of big bats was almost forgotten thanks to players overperforming through the summer, but the fact remains: the team just could not hit. The next logical step would be to shore up the lineup with a trusted name on the market. That common assumption has two key problems, though: the available free-agent pool is underwhelming, and Beantown has been loath to spend much money lately anyway. One name that might become more discussed in the coming months is Randy Arozarena, the Seattle outfielder. Arozarena offers the best available plate presence for the Fenway team. Acquiring him means moving another outfield asset, perhaps trading someone like Jarren Duran. Given Randy’s great 2026, though, leaving Duran behind seems worthwhile.
Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has endured a complicated tenure. He has faced intense scrutiny, especially after the Rafael Devers deal and early-season struggles. The winning baseball of July and August was enough to quiet the doubters and earn him an early contract extension, keeping him attached to Massachusetts for a few more seasons. The downfall that followed has renewed much of the skepticism surrounding his philosophy for running a ball club. I don’t think it’s dramatic to call his next string of moves make-or-break for his legacy as an executive. Will he adjust his sails, answering for the weak spots in his “defense and pitching first” mindset? Or will he double down, trusting his gut for another year of varied results? It’s looking like it’ll be a long winter.
