Everything to Know About the 2026 Blue Jays Newest Rookie Center Fielder
Brett Bateman made his MLB Debut on Friday night, just four days after Golden Glover Daulton Varsho was traded to the Houston Astros. The rookie was acquired through the infamous Kevin Gausman trade and played only two games with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons before joining The Show. Coincidentally, he made his Blue Jays debut the same night Gausman made his Cubs debut. The 24-year-old had a fabulous introduction to the Majors, going one for two, while getting a double on his first at bat, as well as two walks and a run.
The St.Paul native was drafted in the eighth round of the 2023 draft from the University of Minnesota. He’s played all of 2026 with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs so far, but made his way through every level of Chicago's Minor League System. The lefty’s stats this season include a .311 AVG, a .845 OPS, and three home runs. In 84 games, he’s had 91 hits, 33 RBIs, and 62 walks. Other good news for the Jays is that Bateman has a very brief history of IL stints, including a couple lasting just over a week each. Just into his third year in the minors, the 24-year-old has career stats of .280 AVG, .763 OPS, 220 walks, and 122 RBIs.
Varsho’s trade was a devastating one for Toronto since the center fielder was on the team for three years. The Golden Glover was known for putting his all into catching a fly ball. He often fell over to snag a catch and was even known to run into walls to save a game. Without him, Myles Straw and Nathan Lukes were wonderful replacements. Straw is known for his speed, often a pinch runner, and Lukes is known for his long at-bats, most recently going 15 pitches against Zack Wheeler and getting a base hit out of it. However, having solid young talent like Bateman gives manager John Schneider more flexibility with his players and adds another lefty to the roster. Seeing such a great debut from the 24-year-old proves that Toronto’s front office knows what they're doing. While the trade deadline’s losses may have been heartbreaking, the Jays haven’t lost two games in a row since July 22nd, and at just three and a half games from a Wild Card spot, Toronto can still have a chance to redeem their loss in the future.
