Experienced Backup Big Man on the Way to Charlotte

NBA

This past NBA season, after signing with the Phoenix Suns last summer, Mason Plumlee served as a steady presence off the bench, providing veteran leadership and frontcourt stability for a team in need of size and energy. Despite dealing with a reduced role compared to earlier in his career, Plumlee remained effective in limited minutes, averaging over four points and six rebounds on 61.9% shooting. His ability to finish around the rim, set screens, and move the ball made him a dependable option in the second unit. While his team faced their fair share of ups and downs, Plumlee’s professionalism and effort never wavered. He entered the 2025 offseason as one of the more experienced big men available on the market.

Originally drafted 22nd overall by Brooklyn in the 2013 NBA Draft, Plumlee has built a career on his work ethic, unselfishness, and team-first mentality. He’s played for multiple franchises across both conferences and consistently found ways to contribute regardless of role. Over time, he has earned the trust of coaches and teammates with his basketball IQ and willingness to do the dirty work. Plumlee isn’t one to dominate headlines, but he’s played important minutes for playoff teams and understands what it takes to win. His combination of athleticism, passing vision, and interior defense have kept him in the league for more than a decade.

Through the 2024-2025 season, Plumlee has appeared in 860 regular season games and averaged eight points, six rebounds, and two assists per game. His career field goal percentage sits at an impressive 59.5%, reflecting his smart shot selection and effectiveness as a finisher. Beyond the numbers, he’s known for doing the little things: talking on defense, boxing out, and making the extra pass. He’s also a solid presence in the locker room, often serving as a mentor for younger players. While he may not be a nightly headline, he’s the type of role player every contending team needs.

Now, Plumlee begins the next chapter of his career after signing with the Charlotte Hornets on a one-year deal worth $3.6 million. His experience, size, and willingness to embrace his role make him a strong fit for the Hornets’ rotation. At 35 years old, he continues to bring toughness and consistency that can anchor a bench unit. This new opportunity offers a chance for him to make a postseason push and contribute to winning basketball. With so many teams valuing veterans who know how to play the right way, Plumlee’s value remains strong heading into the summer and the new season with Charlotte.
