Former Rookie of the Year Signs with the New York Knicks
The 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2022 Sixth Man of the Year, Malcolm Brogdon, has had an up-and-down career, largely due to recurring injuries. While he has never completed a full 82-game NBA season, Brogdon consistently makes an impact when healthy, as proven by the awards he earned during the two seasons in which he played the most games. He has become a low-risk, high-reward player in this year's free agency cycle, with several teams interested. Today, it was announced by Shams Charania that Brogdon would sign with the New York Knicks on a one-year deal.
Despite being selected in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft, Malcolm Brogdon has built an impressive NBA career defined by consistency and impact on both ends of the floor. Brogdon began his career with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he made an immediate impact by winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award. He later spent time with the Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, and Portland Trail Blazers, providing steady guard play at all his stops. Brogdon has carved out a valuable role as both a starter and a sixth man throughout his tenure. Through over 450 career games, he has averaged 15.4 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game, shooting 46.5% from the field and 38.4% from three-point range. His ability to contribute in multiple roles has helped him remain a sought-after presence well into his career at 32 years of age.
Coming off a two-year, $45 million extension originally signed with the Trail Blazers, Brogdon remains a valuable contributor when healthy. Durability has been the recurring concern, as he’s dealt with various injuries throughout his career. Still, his ability to lead an offense, knock down shots, and defend multiple positions ensures he’ll continue to be valuable in this league. Guard-needy teams were in serious high demand for Brogdon, as now he will look to get back in the swing of things with the Knicks after only playing 24 games last season with the Washington Wizards. Hopefully, he stays healthy and brings New York to another successful playoff appearance and hopefully an NBA Championship.
