Formidable Veteran Backup QB Re-Signs with the Ravens
During the course of the Baltimore Ravens’ 2025-26 season, sixth-year backup quarterback Tyler Huntley had the opportunity to showcase his playmaking ability, something not many backup quarterbacks get to do on a regular basis during the season. However, with Baltimore’s star QB Lamar Jackson dealing with lingering injury issues throughout the year, including knee, ankle and back hiccups, Huntley, who is no stranger to calling the shots under center, ended up playing a major role in keeping the Ravens’ playoff aspirations alive in the latter half of the regular season, despite Baltimore’s season coming to a crushing end in the regular season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Due to Huntley’s improved play this past season, the 27-year-old’s popularity on the free-agent market began to grow, with several teams eyeing his services for the 2026-27 season. However, before the veteran backup could test the free agency waters, Adam Schefter reported that the Baltimore Ravens and Huntley have agreed to a two-year deal worth $11 million as Huntley aims to stay ready if needed to put his Superman cape on to keep the Ravens on the right track next season.
Prior to joining the NFL, Huntley played collegiate football at the University of Utah, where he started as the backup quarterback in his freshman season before jumping into the starter role in his final three seasons in college. In his senior year, Huntley saw his most success as he helped lead the Utah Utes to the Pac-12 Conference Final after finishing the year with 3,092 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and just four interceptions, while also rushing for another five touchdowns. Despite his uptick in performance in his final collegiate season, Huntley went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft but eventually signed with the Ravens’ practice squad. In his NFL career, Huntley has largely proven himself to be a capable backup quarterback, having played for the Ravens, Browns, and Dolphins. However, Huntley has found his most success in his stints with the Ravens, where Lamar Jackson and Huntley share similar playing styles, highlighted by the read-option run/passing game. In his six-year career, Huntley has recorded 3,212 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and a 66.2% completion percentage.
Last season, Huntley was forced into action at various parts of the Ravens’ season with Jackson sidelined due to injury. In the two games that Huntley started, playing in five total, the Florida native led Baltimore to two impressive wins over what would become playoff teams: first in Week Eight against the Chicago Bears, defeating them 30-16, and then in Week 17 on the road at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers in what was a must-win game to keep the Ravens’ playoff hopes alive heading into the final week of the season, as Baltimore ended up beating the Packers convincingly, 41-24. As Huntley heads into the 2026-27 season with Baltimore, the veteran backup will aim to continue his impressive playmaking abilities. However, he ultimately hopes he doesn’t have to see the field as the Lamar Jackson and the Ravens push for a Super Bowl title this upcoming season.
