UCLA Maintains Its Grip on the Top Spot in the 2026 College Baseball Rankings

The college baseball Power 10 rankings have had one constant at the top all season long: UCLA. The Bruins enter the week having swept three ranked opponents at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series and outscored TCU 30-8 in a home weekend series. No program in Division I returns more production for 2026, with UCLA bringing back 83 percent of its overall output, including 85 percent of last season's plate appearances and 78 percent of innings pitched. This kind of continuity is rare in the transfer portal era, and it is the main reason the Bruins are a legitimate threat to hold the top spot this season. The real question heading into Big Ten Conference play is not whether UCLA has been dominant, but whether it can sustain it.

The biggest reason to believe the Bruins can stay on top is outfielder Will Gasparino, who leads the entire country in home runs with 10-12 games, and has already set a historic power surge to start the season. Gasparino transferred from Texas over the offseason and has made an immediate impact, slashing .390/.528/1.220 while batting out of the eight-hole, meaning opposing pitching staffs are getting him into counts they should not be losing. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series after going five-for-11 with four home runs against three Top 25 opponents, and he also leads the nation in total bases with 50. The concern, however, is sustainability. Gasparino went hitless against San Diego State in UCLA’s loss, a reminder that if opposing teams find a pattern and exploit it, the offense could stall at the worst time.

Pairing the power-hitting outfielder at the center of the conversation is shortstop Roch Cholowsky, the preseason Player of the Year and projected number one overall MLB Draft pick, who is slashing .341/.448/.909 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs on the season. Together, Cholowsky and Gasparino have combined for 17 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 90 total bases, creating one of the most dangerous offensive duos in the country. The Bruins’ upcoming schedule doesn’t get easier, with Big Ten road trips to Ohio State, Iowa, and Rutgers on the calendar, followed by a crosstown rivalry series against USC and a late-season stretch against Michigan State and Washington. Cholowsky will be the difference maker in these environments, as the lineup often leans on his abilities to deliver. If he continues to produce at this level, there is little reason UCLA cannot hold the top ranking through the end of the regular season.

The third piece is first baseman Mulivai Levu, a Baseball America Preseason Third Team All-American who gives the middle of the lineup a physical presence that prevents opponents from pitching around Cholowsky. Levu and Cholowsky last season combined for the second-most RBIs by a UCLA duo in program history, and both players are picking up exactly where they left off in this 2026 college baseball season. The biggest threat to UCLA’s hold on the number one ranking is not a single opponent, but it is the 54-game schedule that includes 30 Big Ten Conference matchups against programs that have been circling this opener since the schedule dropped. Programs like Texas and LSU are waiting should the Bruins stumble, and both have the roster to vault into the top spot quickly. UCLA has the talent, the experience, and the depth to maintain their position, but conference play will be the true test of whether this program is built for a full season at the top.
