FSU Gains Elite Right-Handed Pitching Prospect in Transfer Portal

The Florida State Seminoles struggled to maintain the power they held in the 2024 season this year. Though they remained ranked in the D1 Baseball and NCAA Top 25 Rankings throughout the 2025 season, the talent wasn’t at the same level as it was when the Seminoles made their postseason run in Omaha. This year, the Noles fell early in the postseason, knocked out by Oregon State in the Corvallis Regional. After a disappointing end to their season, FSU needed to make big moves in the transfer portal. This week the Noles made the biggest move they’ve made since the portal opened, snagging the right-handed reliever Brodie Purcell.

A product of the University of Southern California, Purcell finished the 2025 season making the All-Big Ten second team. He’s the ninth prospect the Seminoles have picked up in the portal so far. He is also the seventh pitcher added to their arsenal this offseason. A reliever like Purcell can help FSU get out of close-call games on top instead of falling behind by just a few runs. The Noles beat out SEC powerhouse and 2024 College World Series Champions Tennessee for this commitment, making this not only a win for the Noles but for the ACC as well. While the SEC has proved it still remains the most competitive conference in college baseball, adding athletes like Purcell can only improve the strength of competition in ACC play.

The incoming junior still has two years of eligibility left to share his talents with the Seminoles. In his most recent season with the Trojans, Purcell recorded a 2.11 ERA in just over 42 innings pitched. He’s made impressive progress since his freshman season. In 2024, he held opponents to a .219 batting average compared to a .177 average this past season. In his 27 appearances on the mound in the 2025 season, Purcell struck out over 50 batters this season and walked only 19. A consistent quality right-handed arm is exactly what this bullpen has been missing, and it seems FSU’s coaching staff believes Purcell is the solution to their bullpen problem.
