Future Under Center: What To Look for During the Giants Rookie Quarterback’s Mandatory Mini Camps

NFL

Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has been turning heads since he was drafted by the New York Football Giants earlier this off-season. He has had several great days at OTAS, with very few mistakes being made. He has been training with veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to get him into shape for the upcoming mandatory mini-camps. Here are several areas to keep track of during the next phase of the offseason.

Dart has shown a lot of accuracy and smooth completions to tight end Daniel Bellinger at this week's OTAs. Head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coach Mike Kafka were pleased to see how well their young rookie quarterback did, and they know that his development for the team will be a long-term project. They don’t want to hold Dart out of significant reps for long, but they want him to take the time to develop behind both of their veteran quarterbacks. Wilson is currently mentoring him and showing him the way. This veteran has stated that Dart’s arrival hasn’t altered his approach yet, but he is in the process of getting there within the season.

Dart is not afraid to get in the middle of it all. He has shown confidence and is ready to take on whatever comes his way. His throws have been confident. This young rookie quarterback hasn’t had much field time, but enough to prove and impress everyone who has even watched him. It’s a good early start, and there are several key areas to keep up with during this coming week for Dart and the Giants' mini-camps.

The coaching staff wants to track his volume, pocket work, and performance under pressure. Keep this in mind while watching him this coming week. They have not tried him out with pressure yet, but if he can pull something great off, then the Giants may know what they have right then and there. He has to give them more.

The other area to keep in mind is his decision-making skills. If he is under pressure, then he needs to quickly find the guy who is wide open and get the ball to them fast. The Giants have struggled in this area for a while. The team has yet to see him pull any of this off, but it will be something to work with during the mandatory mini-camps.

Dart already has impactful skills and has been a successful quarterback in college. If he can do any of this, then he will be in great shape for this coming season despite being the team's backup. This is the time when coaches make the decisions that need to be made. Dart has been in many of the coaches' conversations, but there are a few areas to watch in the coming weeks.
