Giants 2023 First-Round Cornerback Is Making a Statement in 2026

NFL

New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks has already been given one more chance to remain in Big Blue. He has spent a lot of time working to fix himself and prove it to the team. It really showed in Week Four when he caught a game-clinching interception that helped the Giants come out on top. With head coach John Harbaugh stepping in and new defensive coach Dennard Wilson, he has also made a big turnaround. He has talent, but the team has known that for a while; it was just a matter of him finding a way to use it with the Giants' defensive line.

The New York Giants selected Banks with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Giants traded up one spot with the Jacksonville Jaguars to secure the Maryland cornerback. Banks entered the league with a reputation for his size, speed, and physical coverage style. New York viewed him as a potential long-term starter who could help strengthen a secondary that needed more young talent. His selection came with high expectations, especially because the Giants used valuable draft capital to move up and get him.

In Sunday's game, fans saw a different side of Banks than they had in the past two seasons. In this game against the Arizona Cardinals, it was about more than that one interception. This cornerback returned to the team after missing pieces of past seasons with a calf injury and repeatedly attacked how Arizona planned to beat them. Banks wouldn't allow that to happen on his watch. His response helped the Giants evaluate why they drafted him in the first place.

In the past, Banks would make constant mistakes under the Brian Daboll coaching staff. For him, unfortunately, it would snowball, and the team would suffer in the worst ways possible. It had never been easy for him, and the Giants had to find ways to make it work. Then he would be out for weeks on end. Having him see what would work best for his team is a definite improvement. The former Maryland cornerback also found confidence he didn't have before, helping his team make the plays needed to pull off this win.

However, one interception followed by a touchdown does not erase two inconsistent seasons. Big Blue wants to see more from him before deciding whether to keep him on for his fifth-year option at season's end. They want the cornerback to become more dependable. New York’s defensive line has already taken several significant blows, including their pass rusher Brian Burns, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. That puts more pressure on the defensive line against whoever they face. If Banks can become the consistent outside cornerback the Giants hoped for in 2023, it would answer one of the biggest questions about their secondary.

Now, Banks has to show that Sunday was not simply one great moment. It has to become something bigger. As the Giants prepare for their Week Five matchup against the Washington Commanders, Banks will have another opportunity to prove that the player who raced 98 yards down the MetLife Stadium sideline is the version New York can expect moving forward. He can pull off these plays and help stop the runs his opponents are trying to put up. This is only the beginning of a fresh start for this cornerback.
