Giants 2026 Training Camp Could End With a New Starter at Wide Receiver

NFL

Jalin Hyatt has been on a downward slope for the New York Giants for the past several seasons. This wide receiver has struggled to make plays happen on the field. When he is given the chance to make a play, Hyatt somehow manages to drop the ball or panic when it comes his way. It has never worked out in his favor. This coming season, however, this current New York Giant may be looking at his current position being in jeopardy. Head Coach John Harbaugh isn’t messing around. He is making decisions quickly about who needs to stay and who needs to be benched this coming season.

Multiple Chances, Little Progress

New York has given the former third-round pick multiple chances to pull himself together. New York is quickly running out of ideas for him to be a better receiver for the team. This 2023 third-round pick's struggles stem from a combination of factors. He has dealt with inconsistent quarterback play, limited opportunities, difficulty earning a consistent role, and the emergence of other receiving options ahead of him on the depth chart. Despite possessing elite speed, Hyatt has been unable to develop into the reliable receiver the Giants envisioned.

Malachi Fields Is Making a Strong First Impression

That said, the person who may be taking his position is Malachi Fields. The 2026 third-round pick has already shown in both OTAs and Minicamps that he can overpower in the position to start during the regular season. The rookie pass catcher gives the Giants something they have been missing: a physical receiver who can win contested catches. He can also create mismatches on the outside. At six-foot-four and over 215 pounds, Fields uses his size, strong hands, and wide catch radius to make difficult grabs, especially in the red zone and along the sidelines. He also brings toughness after the catch and is a willing blocker, making him a valuable asset in both the passing and running game. This receiver already overpowers the speedy receiver by multiple milestones as is. This former Notre Dame receiver has developed much faster than the 2023 draft pick.

A Training Camp Battle Worth Watching

Fields appears to have a legitimate opportunity to overtake Hyatt because he offers a skill set that better fits what the Giants need on the outside. Their receiver corps has struggled for the last several years. Especially last season, when their star starting receiver Malik Nabers, went out with an injury. Big Blue is looking to fill this void. The Giants also traded up in the third round to draft the first-year wideout, signaling they view him as more than just a developmental player and expect him to contribute early. While nothing is guaranteed before the regular season, Fields has positioned himself to challenge Hyatt for meaningful snaps if he continues his strong training camp and early breakout performance.
