Giants Fan Favorite Quarterback May See the Practice Squad This Season
The New York Football Giants are working on finalizing their 53-man roster. That also means roster cuts to certain people on the team. This year, the Giants may decide to cut an all-time fan favorite in Tommy DeVito. It may be both a blessing and a curse for the Giants to do this, but they won’t be losing him altogether if this is the case. DeVito will continue to be a Giant for this coming season; however, next season may be questionable.
It seems the Giants have already decided who their quarterbacks are going to be. They want veteran Russell Wilson to start and backup Jameis Winston, and they want their third-string quarterback for the time being to be Jaxson Dart. However, that may change within the next few weeks if Dart keeps up with how he has been playing. That leaves DeVito as the fourth-string quarterback, ultimately meaning that he will be cut and signed over to the practice squad. He is still going to be a Giant for the season; however, they might have to rework his contract. Teams around the NFL do this all the time when they don’t want to lose a player that they know can play well, but they don’t have any active roster spots for them at the moment. This is the case for DeVito.
DeVito has been a piece of the Giants for the last few years. Last season, he took on a starting role when former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones got benched before parting ways with the team. In the 2023 season, he did fantastically when he brought the Giants several wins before the season came to a close. Last season was another struggle for the Giants, with one injury after another, and they completely blew their season when they kept switching from DeVito to Drew Lock.
If this is the case this coming season, DeVito will return to the Giants roster. He can be quickly elevated and otherwise serve as a scout team quarterback and a mentor figure to Dart behind the scenes. DeVito is embracing the possibility of this occurring. However, this may not be the case at all. The Giants will most likely cut him and turn him into the practice squad by August 26th, when the Giants’ final roster comes out. Cutting this Giant will show everyone that the Giants' quarterback room is set for the coming season.
