Half a Game Back: Can the Blue Jays Complete Their Stunning 2026 Postseason Push?
After a crucial 2-1 series win against the Guardians, the Blue Jays are less than a game back from the final AL Wild Card spot. Conveniently, Cleveland currently has that last spot with a 70-70 record, while Toronto is just behind at 70-71. Up next, the 2025 World Series runners-up play the Royals, who have less than a one percent chance of making the playoffs at 63-78. However, Kansas City had a nine-game winning streak from August 16th to the 25th. The Jays fortunately broke that streak on the 26th but ultimately lost the three-game series 2-1. The Miami Marlins also broke their five-game winning streak on September 2nd. Though beating the Royals individually isn’t all that important, every game counts when four teams are within a game and a half of that last spot.
The American League East leaders are the Tampa Bay Rays at 83-57, so Toronto can only realistically focus on the Wild Card race. Right now, the Yankees, who are also in the AL East, have the first Wild Card spot at 80-60. The Red Sox, another division rival, have the second spot at 76-65. As previously mentioned, the Guardians barely have the third spot. Along with the Blue Jays, the Texas Rangers are now half a game back. The last member of the AL East, the Baltimore Orioles, are a game and a half back, which is incredibly relevant since Toronto plays them two more times during the last month of the season. In between those series, they also play the Rangers. Their other three opponents are the 55-86 Athletics, the 64-75 Tigers, and the 67-73 Reds of the National League. Despite having a similar record to the Jays, Cincinnati has less than a one percent chance of making the playoffs.
August changed the trajectory of Toronto’s season. After entering the month at 51-59, the Blue Jays surged to a 17-11 record in August. By early September, they had climbed to within one game of .500. Trade-deadline additions like rookie Brett Bateman and right-hander José Soriano have helped fuel a turnaround that once seemed out of reach. It’s safe to say the Jays are finally turning their season around, but will it be enough? Did they turn it around too late? They still have a 21% chance of making the playoffs, but to get there, Toronto has to stay consistent, passionate, and victorious.
