How a 2026 Fifth-Round Draft Pick Can Spark the Chiefs Offense
By the end of the 2025 season, Chiefs Kingdom wanted some changes made to a Kansas City offense that underwhelmed to the tune of a 6-11 campaign. With inconsistency at the wide receiver position, it was widely speculated that the Chiefs would take a pass catcher high in the 2026 NFL Draft. That speculation turned to frustration for some when the first four picks on the board, two of them in the first round, were all defensive prospects. Where was the help for Patrick Mahomes? That help wouldn’t come until the fifth round when receiver Cyrus Allen was selected at 176th overall out of Cincinnati.
At five-feet and 11 inches, 180lbs, Allen is slight of frame but has a speed and elusiveness that translates into big plays. In a game against the University of Utah last year, Allen torched a pair of defensive backs to go 88 yards for a touchdown on a bomb thrown by Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby. The former Bearcat had 674 yards and 13 touchdowns in his last collegiate year in 2025, frequently displaying an explosiveness off the line that made for consistent separation, which is an area Kansas City has struggled with. Along with north-south speed and acceleration, Allen possesses a shiftiness in open space that makes him frustratingly elusive for opposing defenses. His ability to hop laterally to avoid tackles is a unique and exciting attribute that, along with his other abilities, will make him an effective weapon for coach Andy Reid and Mahomes.
The 2026 season will be a new dawn for the Chiefs’ receiving room with the signing of receivers coach Chad O’Shea. With Rashee Rice in a contract year and Xavier Worthy healthy and eager to prove himself, along with an emerging Tyquan Thornton, O’Shea, who coached the New England Patriots receivers room through three Super Bowls, will have a lot to work with. The addition of the Cincinnati alum will add yet another exciting dynamic to Mahomes’ passing attack. Chosen late in the draft, much to the dismay of many a Chiefs fan, Allen may prove to be a steal in the draft, proving naysayers wrong while part of yet another Kansas City championship campaign.
