How a 31-Year-Old Under-the-Radar Signing has Made an Impact for the 2026 Padres
The 2026 San Diego Padres are possibly the most confusing 26-18 team in recent memory. Coming into the season, the majority of people believed success would stem from a powerful offense spearheaded by stars like Fernando Tatis Jr, Manny Machado, and Jackson Merill. Instead, the Padres have featured one of the worst offenses in baseball, ranking 26th overall in runs scored behind bottom-feeding teams such as the Angels and Rockies. All three aforementioned stars are in the thick of career slumps, particularly Tatis, who has yet to hit a home run as of May 16th. Machado is not faring much better, sporting an OPS+ of 72. As a team, the Padres rank 28th in team OPS, flanked by the Giants and Red Sox, two teams well below .500. Yet despite the slumping stars, San Diego keeps finding ways to win. One of the primary causes of success has been one of their new additions, Miguel Andujar.
Burnt Out Prospect
Entering 2026, the Dominican-born utility bat was signed by the Padres to a simple one-year, $4 million deal with a mutual option for 2027. The move made sense. Andujar was coming off a strange, injury-shortened season that saw him post his best numbers since 2018. The former Yankee did so in 94 games between the Athletics and Reds. In those contests, he slashed .315/.352/.470, an impressive slash line for a player considered a 30-year-old failed prospect. San Diego's Dominican-born power hitter made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees at just 22 years old in 2017. The young slugger instantly made an impact, racking up three hits and four RBI in his first game. Success continued in 2018 as the aggressive contact-first approach finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting, only losing the award to Shohei Ohtani. After the awesome initial season, ‘Papa’ struggled greatly. Injuries and poor performance led to his departure from New York in 2022. The former top prospect failed to play in more than 75 games in any season from 2019 to 2024. His bounce-back in 2025 was a breath of fresh air for a player many had forgotten. Underlying metrics suggested that the 2025 numbers were unsustainable, yet so far, his Padres tenure has looked excellent.
Key Cog
The AL Rookie of the Year finalist essentially forced his way into the 2026 Padres' everyday lineup. Initially, he was receiving playing time as a platoon designated hitter, generally hitting near the five spot. Now the former Rookie of the Year runner-up is the Padres' everyday designated hitter. Manager Craig Stamenn has consistently penciled Andujar into the top three of the lineup in recent days, underscoring the organization's increased confidence in their free-agent grab. It’s easy to see why as well. The 31-year-old is currently hitting .297 while posting an OPS of .811. The numbers have given way to 0.4 WAR in just 33 games as a designated hitter. The Padres' bat-first utility contributor has been clutch as well, knocking in 13 runs over his 122 plate appearances. There is reason to believe that regression may be on the horizon. Baseball Savant reports Adujar's 18th-percentile barrel rate, which isn't ideal for projecting success. However, in 2025, he posted a 15th-percentile barrel rate and still put up near-career-best numbers. To keep the wins coming, the Padres must rely on their surging new addition.
