How a Former 2024 Sixth-Round Pick Is Changing the Game for the Los Angeles Chargers

NFL

Originally cut from the Chargers' 53-man roster in late August, not many anticipated seeing Kimani Vidal as their starting running back by October. He was able to join the team the next day after being cut. He started his NFL career by being drafted in the sixth round of the 2024 draft. Currently, Vidal stands as the only healthy running back, as teammate and rookie Omarion Hampton is recovering from an injury and is not expected to return until Week 10, when the Chargers face the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Thursday, Vidal led the team to victory in their nail-biting game against the Minnesota Vikings on October 23rd. Vidal changed the outcome for the Bolts late in the game with crucial plays that demonstrated his athleticism and skill. For the second time in three weeks, the second-year running back triumphed by tallying up over 100 rushing yards. Vidal is one of the most underappreciated young players in the AFC at just 24 years old.

He also finished with 117 rushing yards and his first NFL touchdown this week against the Vikings. This was his second 100-yard rushing performance in as few as three weeks. Vidal assumed the majority of the Los Angeles Chargers' rushing responsibilities after Hassan Haskins got out. He showed that he could play both roles by participating in 59% of passing plays and 74% of the team's offensive snaps. His exceptional play was crucial to the Chargers' ability to maintain control of the game in the second half and secure the win.

Before playing in the NFL, Vidal played at Troy University and earned many titles for his sportsmanship during his college career. He holds titles such as 2023 Associated Press All-America Third Team and 2023 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year. He broke his university’s all-time, single-season, and single-game rushing records. He earned honorable mentions in 2020 and 2021 and was named to the All-Sun Belt First and Second Teams in consecutive seasons. He became one of the most respected players in Troy's history courtesy of his leadership and commitment.

The Los Angeles Chargers have significantly benefited from Kimani Vidal's dedication and concentration this season.  He has taken on the starting position and ensured the offense remains active despite multiple injuries among running backs. His consistent performance has enabled the Chargers to keep the balance and manage games during critical moments. Vidal's rapid ascent from a sixth-round draft selection to a reliable starter showcases his development and dedication. His contributions will continue to be vital for the team's achievements throughout the season, potentially establishing him as an essential player for the Chargers in the future.
