How Can the Texans Take Advantage of a Shorthanded 49ers Squad?

NFL

The Houston Texans go into Week Eight with an opportunity to make a statement as they go against a San Francisco 49ers squad that is missing several of its biggest contributors on both sides of the ball. So far, the 49ers have been without quarterback Brock Purdy, defensive leaders Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who has been out since Week Four. These absences create an opportunity for the Texans team to take control of the game and show that they can take advantage when facing an injury-riddled opponent. Currently sitting at 2-4, Houston needs a complete performance from both sides to get back in a competitive race in the AFC South, and this matchup provides a good opportunity to do it.

Protect C.J. Stroud and Control the Line of Scrimmage

While this season has been shaky, C.J. Stroud has shown glimpses of why he’s one of the league's most promising young quarterbacks, but he can only do that when the protection holds up. The Texans’ offensive line has faced its share of struggles this season and last, allowing way too much pressure that has forced Stroud into quick throws, sacks, and tough reads. This game presents a chance for improvement as the 49ers’ pass rush will be missing two of its best players in Bosa and Warner. If Houston’s line can keep Stroud comfortable in the pocket and give him more time to distribute the ball, especially without his WR1, Nico Collins, who is out, the offense can build early offensive momentum.

Establish the Run and Open Up Play Action

The Texans' backfield of Woody Marks and Nick Chubb can also help control the game’s tempo against a 49ers defense that has lost much of its front-seven strength. Running the football efficiently will not only keep the defense on its toes but also open up play-action opportunities for Stroud. Marks’ speed and Chubb’s power complement each other well, giving Houston a balanced ground attack that can wear down defenders throughout the game. If the Texans can establish the run early, it will set up big plays downfield and make the 49ers' defense second-guess itself.

Let the Defense Set the Tone

While much of the focus will be on the offense, Houston’s elite defense has another chance to prove why it’s one of the toughest units in the league. The Texans rank near the top in takeaways and have shown an ability to make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. With Brock Purdy out, the 49ers offense will rely on backup Mac Jones, who will face constant pressure like he did against the Rams. The Texans' pass rush of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter will look to terrorize the former Alabama QB. If Houston’s defense can force early turnovers and control field position, this game could turn into a long day for San Francisco’s offense.

This is a game where the Texans can finally show consistency and take care of business against a team that’s missing its core stars. Houston has the talent and defensive firepower to take advantage of San Francisco’s weakened lineup, but it will come down to execution and discipline. Stroud will need to lead with poise and take what the defense gives him, while the Texans' defense must stay relentless and dominate from start to finish. If Houston can put it all together, this could be the game that sparks their turnaround and reminds everyone that they’re better than what their record shows.
