How Extending a 2021 National Champion Defensive End Improves the Jaguars Defensive Core
After winning the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship with the Georgia Bulldogs, junior defensive end Travon Walker’s draft stock was at an all-time high. The Jacksonville Jaguars would select the standout athlete with their first overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, the team’s second year in a row with the first overall selection. Walker had a quiet rookie year in Duval County, playing 15 games and racking up three and a half sacks and his only career interception. However, the phenom from Thomaston, Georgia, would have two great seasons in 2023 and 2024. Walker ended up with 20.5 sacks over those two seasons, along with 23 tackles for loss, 113 tackles, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles. After getting wrist surgery in 2025, Walker had another quiet campaign during the team’s run to a division title and playoff berth.
Entering his fifth season, the Jaguars still see an opportunity for growth and leadership in the young star. Many questioned whether the franchise would seek to extend and secure the former Bulldog for years to come. Earlier this week, the team made that a reality. The Jaguars signed Walker to a four-year contract extension that cost the team $110 million. The team is investing in Walker to be a leader of this defensive core that was the best in the league in stopping the run in 2025. Paired up with veteran captain Josh Hines-Allen, it only makes sense that the two of them could continue to lead this Jacksonville defense to great heights.
Although Walker has had no drastic injury concerns in his past, the lack of consistent seasons could be worrisome for the Jaguars. The drop in performance in 2025 from the previous two seasons was concerning, but it is obvious that defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile and head coach Liam Coen have faith in Walker to bounce back. A healthy Walker in 2026 could mean big things not just for the Jaguars defensive line, but the defense as an entire unit. Fans can expect a big impact from the tenured athlete for years to come in Jacksonville.
